Transperineal low-dose rate iridium-192 interstitial brachytherapy in cervical carcinoma stage IIB.
To assess local control, survival and complications in patients with cervical carcinoma Stage IIB treated radically with transperineal Iridium-192 low-dose rate interstitial brachytherapy following external beam radiotherapy. ⋯ Interstitial brachytherapy after external beam irradiation in patients with cervical carcinoma Stage IIB results in acceptable local control, survival and complication rates. Increased dose to the cervical disease results in improved local control and survival and should therefore be considered while optimizing brachytherapy treatment plans. Comparison of the results with those of standard intracavitary therapy remains to be proven in a randomized trial.

Prognostic significance of local recurrence in breast cancer after postmastectomy radiotherapy.
We have retrospectively analyzed the impact of local recurrence in patients with adjuvant radiation therapy after mastectomy for breast cancer. ⋯ Local recurrence after treatment of breast cancer with mastectomy + radiotherapy +/- systemic therapy is associated with a significantly higher risk of distant metastases and death. In this analysis, local recurrence was a strong and, besides lymph node status and T category, an independent risk factor for survival. Minimizing the risk of local recurrence is therefore an essential goal of a curative treatment concept.

Review Case Reports Comparative Study
[Recall dermatitis caused by re-exposure to docetaxel following irradiation of the brain. Case report and review of the literature].
Together with radiation therapy the taxanes Paclitaxel and Docetaxel are more and more integrated into multimodal therapy regimens concerning breast- and lung cancer as well as squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. Especially in palliative situations we have to be aware of increasing side effects caused by interaction of the different treatment components. Therefore we report on a severe recall dermatitis that occurred in two breast-cancer patients following irradiation of the brain and reexposition to Docetaxel. ⋯ The dermatitis related to irradiation and reexposition to Docetaxel observed in our two cases is interpreted as a recall reaction. The basic initiating pathologic mechanism has not been solved completely. Further investigation is needed to find out how the taxanes can be used in combination radiochemotherapy regimens without causing severe toxicity to the irradiated skin or mucosa.

To analyze prognostic factors in patients with a glioblastoma multiforme treated in an academic institute over the last 10 years. ⋯ Despite technical developments in surgery and radiotherapy over the last 10 years, survival of patients with a glioblastoma multiforme has not improved in our institution. The analysis of prognostic factors corresponded well with data from the literature. A short hypofractionated scheme seems to be a more appropriate treatment for patients with intermediate or poor prognosis as compared to a conventional scheme. The benefit in median survival for patients treated with an interstitial boost is partly explained by patient selection. Since there were no long-term survivors with this boost treatment, its clinical value, if there is one, is still limited.
