Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and diabetes mellitus.

We investigated the prevalence of malnutrition in a sample of hospitalized patients in Argentina. ⋯ This study suggested that malnutrition among hospital inpatients in Argentina is common and that the patients' nutrition status is largely unrecognized and neglected in their hospital charts.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids have been characterized as immunonutrients, but the effect of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on intestinal permeability has rarely been reported. ⋯ GLA and DHA affect tight junction permeability in intestinal monolayer cells specifically and in a concentration-dependent manner.
