Short-term cigarette smoke (CS) exposure leads to acute lung inflammation through its influence over oxidants/antioxidants imbalance. Antioxidant vitamins such as ascorbic acid and alpha-tocopherol interact with oxidizing radicals. It is not clear if antioxidant supplementation can reduce inflammatory lung responses. Thus our aim was to analyze the effects of vitamin supplementation on the lungs of mice exposed to six cigarettes per day with histologic, cytological, and biochemical methods. ⋯ Our results showed that CS induced acute lung inflammation. The inflammatory process after cigarette exposures was reduced by ascorbic acid, alpha-tocopherol, or more efficiently by both vitamin supplementations.

This study examined baseline dietary intake, body weight, and physiologic status in patients enrolled in a dietary intervention for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). ⋯ These patients reported a low-carbohydrate, low-fiber, high-fat (especially saturated) diet, although they stated they are not following any of the popular low-carbohydrate diets. Patients with T2DM may find the current trend toward reducing weight through low-carbohydrate diets attractive for control of blood glucose, despite ADA recommendations. This dietary pattern may represent a popular trend that extends beyond our particular study and, if so, has serious cardiovascular implications in this vulnerable population of T2DM patients.

Comparison of metabolic monitors in critically ill, ventilated patients.
We compared the Deltatrac II, the M-COVX, and the Evita 4 metabolic monitoring devices under clinical conditions. ⋯ Poor agreement was found between the Deltatrac II and M-COVX or Evita 4 metabolic monitors, despite a good correlation between measurements, leading to the conclusion that the M-COVX and Evita 4 provide less accurate measurements of metabolic gas exchange in stable ventilated patients. These devices can be used for daily nutritional assessment and continuous monitoring, but the Deltatrac II remains the method of choice for metabolic measurement.
