Obesity is associated with various health afflictions, including ocular complications such as diabetic retinopathy, high intraocular pressure, cataracts, and macular degeneration. We previously reported progressive retinal degeneration after the onset of obesity in the spontaneously obese rat (WNIN/Ob) model. In the present study, we investigated vitamin A supplementation to ameliorate obesity-associated retinal degeneration in the WNIN/Ob rat. ⋯ Vitamin A supplementation alleviated obesity-associated retinal degeneration in the WNIN/Ob rat.

The objectives of the present study were to identify the association among levels of persistent academic stress, appetite, and dietary habits and to determine the specific types of sweet foods consumed by Korean high-school students according to their academic stress levels. ⋯ Unhealthy stress-related food choices may compromise high-school students' health and contribute to their morbidity. The findings of the present study could be used to help nutritionists develop effective strategies for nutritional education and counseling to improve adolescent health.

Recent advances have established a fundamental role for inflammation in mediating all stages of atherosclerosis, from initiation through progression. Quercetin may be a powerful bioactive constituent of the human diet, as a free radical scavenging agent and through interactions with various endogenous proteins. The present study focused on the effect of quercetin on inflammation induced by a hypercholesterolemic diet (HCD) in rabbits. ⋯ This study demonstrates that quercetin modulates the deleterious inflammatory effects induced by an HCD in vivo in rabbits, suggesting its beneficial effect in decreasing inflammation in atherosclerotic progression and regression.

Several studies have shown that soy isoflavones have estrogen-like activities and might constitute an alternative to hormone replacement treatment. The present study investigated the effects of soy isoflavones alone and combined with vitamin D3 on prevention of bone loss. ⋯ Treatment with soy isoflavones might be an alternative to hormone replacement therapy in decreasing bone loss from postmenopausal estrogen deficiency. In addition, there are further effects on increasing transcription factor osterix expression and preosteoblast proliferation when these were combined with vitamin D3.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex chronic inflammatory disease involving oxidative stress as well as a wide variety of cells activated from smoking cigarettes. There have been disappointingly few therapeutic advances in drug therapy for COPD. Plant polyphenols have been the topic of much research regarding their antioxidant activities and antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. In the present study, we ask whether apple polyphenol provides protection against cigarette smoke (CS)-induced acute lung injury. ⋯ Taken together, APP may be a potential dietary nutrient supplement agent to improve quality of life of COPD patients by inhibiting CS-exposed acute lung injury via P38 MAPK signaling pathway.
