The effect of adiposity on bone mass in the early phases of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children and adolescents is unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the role of adiposity on bone mass in the first 3 y of diagnosis of IBD. The expected result is that increased adiposity will be associated with increased bone mass in both the controls and IBD subjects. ⋯ Adiposity was associated with reduced bone mass in the early phases of IBD, but with increased bone mass in the controls.

This study provides cross-sectional information on alcoholic beverages as potential sources of moisture and calories for drinkers in the United States. Associations between number of drinks per day and body weight status were also studied. ⋯ Alcoholic beverages contribute to moisture intake despite the diuretic effect of their ethanol content. Calorie intake increase with increasing alcohol intake among men and women but only men associate with increased likelihood of overweight and obesity. Women drinkers associate with lower body mass index and are less likely to be overweight or obese.

Athletes and bodybuilders consume high-protein supplements to obtain energy and enhance the development and strength of their muscles. Over time, different investigations have revealed dysfunctions of their body organs. There are contradictions among scientists concerning the benefits and the alarm of developing body dysfunction. The aim of this study was to illustrate the effects on consumption of two anabolic protein supplements on body weight and structure and function of hepatocytes in male albino Wistar rats. ⋯ Hyperwhey and SA protein formula administration dramatically altered the liver function and increased hepatic damage similar to the development of suspected diabetes.

Uncontrolled diabetes is associated with a compromised antioxidant state of the body. Consequentially, the reactive oxygen species generated lead to oxidative insult and associated complications. Based on this paradigm, exogenous antioxidant supplementation is thought to exert a therapeutic role in type 2 diabetes (T2-D) biology. ⋯ The study illustrates the antihyperglycemic and antioxidant potential of vitamin A in vivo, which has potential to serve as a dietary intervention in T2-D.

Garlic, in its natural plant state, has a great history in ancient medicine as a remedy for many diseases. In our study, the gastroprotective effect of aged garlic extract (AGE) and the possible underlying mechanisms were investigated in an experimental model of indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer. ⋯ AGE corrected the histopathological abnormalities in gastric tissue and proved a promising gastroprotective role in gastric ulcer.
