The aims of this study were to characterize, among pregnant Mexican women, gestational weight gain (GWG) trajectories; assess associations of maternal dietary quality score (MDQS) with GWG during early-mid pregnancy, middle pregnancy, late pregnancy, and prolonged pregnancy; and evaluate the association between MDQS and adequacy of GWG, throughout pregnancy. We hypothesized that higher MDQS adherence is protective against insufficient or excessive GWG across pregnancy and that the association between MDQS adherence and GWG would vary by prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) category. ⋯ A better quality diet, as measured by MDQS, was associated with appropriate GWG during pregnancy in the PRINCESA cohort.

Dietary intake of vegetables is one of the key lifestyle factors associated with preventing cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Although previous studies have provided evidence that dietary factors can alter global DNA methylation levels in humans, little work has been done on dietary factors influencing methylation levels of specific genes associated with CVD. The aim of this study was to examine whether dietary intake of vegetables was associated with adenosine triphosphate-binding membrane cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) DNA methylation levels in leukocytes in a Japanese population. ⋯ High dietary intake of vegetables was associated with decreased ABCA1 DNA methylation levels in Japanese women. This may contribute to a better understanding of the protective effects of dietary vegetable intake on CVD.

Time to treatment response of a magnesium- and sulphate-rich natural mineral water in functional constipation.
First-line recommendations for the management of functional constipation include nutritional-hygienic measures. We previously showed that a natural mineral water rich in sulphates and magnesium (Hépar) is efficient in the treatment of functional constipation. The aim of this study was to consolidate those first results and determine a precise time to respond to Hépar. ⋯ This study confirms the efficacy and safety of Hépar in the treatment of functional constipation and shows that it is associated with a response within 7 d. Hépar could be a safe response to the current absence of first-line medication in the treatment of functional constipation.

Although glutamine and alanine have properties that could delay fatigue, recent evidence showed that these amino acids impaired central fatigue markers. Nevertheless, the effect of this intervention on muscle fatigue is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of glutamine and alanine supplementation on muscle fatigue parameters in rats submitted to resistance training (RT). ⋯ Glutamine and alanine supplementation improved muscle fatigue markers without affecting exercise performance.

The effect of single-nucleotide polymorphisms at the ADIPOQ gene locus rs1501299 on metabolic parameters after 9 mo of a high-protein/low-carbohydrate versus a standard hypocaloric diet.
Some adiponectin gene (ADIPOQ) single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been related to basal and adiponectin levels and metabolic parameters. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the genetic variant rs1501299 ADIPOQ gene on biochemical changes after weight loss secondary to a high-protein and low-carbohydrate diet versus a standard severe hypocaloric diet over 9 mo as the primary endpoint. ⋯ After two different hypocaloric diets during 9 mo of intervention, the GG genotype of an ADIPOQ gene variant (rs1501299) is related to better improvement in adiponectin levels, insulin resistance, and lipid profile than T-allele carriers.
