Malnutrition among the elderly is an important health concern in Myanmar. The country is challenged by both an aging population and poor nutritional status. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of malnutrition and elucidate its associated factors among the elderly in Loikaw, Myanmar. ⋯ One in five elderly study participants were malnourished and 50% were at risk for malnutrition. Malnutrition was associated with being ≥70 y of age, having a low educational level, chewing betel, having a history of heart disease, and having dental problems. These findings may alert policymakers to develop and implement effective interventions for improving nutritional status of the elderly population.

The severe form of coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) is characterized by cytokine storm syndrome (CSS) and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Diabetes, obesity, and hypertension have, as minor common denominators, chronic low-grade inflammation and high plasma myeloperoxidase levels, which could be linked to pulmonary phagocytic hyperactivation and CSS. The hyperactivation of M1 macrophages with a proinflammatory phenotype, which is linked to aerobic glycolysis, leads to the recruitment of monocytes, neutrophils, and platelets from circulating blood and plays a crucial role in thrombo-inflammation (as recently demonstrated in COVID-19) through the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps and monocyte-platelet aggregates, which could be responsible for DIC. ⋯ An EKD could guarantee the availability of free fatty acids, which are an optimal fuel supply for these cells. Third, an EKD, which could reduce high lactate formation by macrophages due to glycolysis, could favor the production of interferon type I, which are inhibited by excessive lactate production. From a practical point of view, the hypothesis, in addition to being proven in clinical studies, must obviously take into account the contraindications of an EKD, particularly type 1 or 2 diabetes treated with drugs that can cause hypoglycemia, to avoid the risk for side effects of the diet.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) plays an important role in milk volume homeostasis in the mammary glands during lactation, and 5-HT in milk also may affect infant development. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in 5-HT concentration in breast milk according to the duration of lactation and evaluate whether the 5-HT concentration varied before and after nursing. ⋯ This information may be useful in determining the role of 5-HT in breast milk on infant development and growth.

Loss of muscle mass is associated with worse outcomes in patients with cancer. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of calf circumference (CC) and skeletal muscle index from computed tomography (CT) to predict mortality in patients with cancer. ⋯ Low CC can predict risk of mortality in this cohort of patients. The findings suggest the use of CC as a simple, easy, cost-effective anthropometric measurement to quickly screen patients at risk of death who could benefit from targeted care to improve their prognosis.

Renal phosphate and vitamin D metabolism are regulated by proteohormone fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), which is secreted by bone cells. FGF23 inhibits phosphate reabsorption and the production of calcitriol, active vitamin D (1,25(OH)2D3). FGF23 generated by other cells exerts further paracrine effects in the liver, heart, and immune system. The FGF23 plasma concentration is positively associated with the onset and progression of kidney and cardiovascular diseases, disclosing FGF23 as a potential disease biomarker. The effects of vitamin A on the expression of FGF23 are controversial. Vitamin A components, retinoids, are mainly effective through nuclear retinoic acid receptors (RAR) and exert different effects on bone. The aim of this study was to clarify whether vitamin A modulates the production of FGF23. ⋯ The present study demonstrated that vitamin A is a potent suppressor of FGF23 production through RAR.
