Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic causing one of the biggest challenges for critical care medicine. Mortality from COVID-19 is much greater in elderly men, many of whom succumb to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) triggered by the viral infection. Because there is no specific antiviral treatment against COVID-19, new strategies are urgently needed. ⋯ In the past decade, selenium pharmaconutrition studies have demonstrated some reduction in overall mortality, including how reduced incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia and infectious complications such as ARDS in the critically ill. Consequently, we postulate that intravenous selenium therapy, could be part of the therapeutic fight against COVID-19 in intensive care unit patients with ARDS and that outcomes could be affected by age, sex, and body weight. Our working hypothesis addresses the question: Could high-dose selenite pharmaconutrition, as an early pharmacologic intervention, be effective at reducing the incidence and the progression from type 1 respiratory failure (non-ARDS) to severe ARDS, multiorgan failure, and new infectious complications in patients with COVID-19 patients?

Although in other groups Staphylococcus aureus eradication has proven to be an effective infection prevention measure, to our knowledge, no such studies have been performed in patients on home parenteral nutrition (HPN). The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of chronic nasal mupirocin use on S. aureus eradication and prevention of catheter related infections in patients on HPN. ⋯ Findings from the present study highlighted the potential usefulness of mupirocin ointment prophylaxis to establish S. aureus eradication in patients on HPN. However, awareness for the development of mupirocin resistance is prudent. Further research needs to be carried out to validate these findings.

A diet rich in fish and ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) has been thought to reduce the risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The beneficial effects of fish oil and ω-3 PUFA on CVD can be mediated by epigenetic status of the genes associated with lipid metabolism and inflammation. The aim of this study was to investigate whether dietary fish and fatty acid (FA) intakes are associated with leukocyte ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) DNA methylation levels in a Japanese population. ⋯ Higher dietary fish and ω-3 PUFA intake were associated with lower ABCA1 DNA levels in a Japanese population. The present results may bring potential insights on biological mechanisms underlying the protective effects of dietary fish and ω-3 PUFA intakes on CVD.

Children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and lymphoblastic lymphoma often experience significant weight gain during induction therapy. However, a subgroup of patients may experience weight loss, which can impact outcomes; thus, identifying and understanding this underrecognized concern is important. Our aim was to identify the prevalence and predictors for weight loss during ALL induction therapy. ⋯ Future studies should aim to better understand the etiology and importance of weight loss during induction therapy.
