Pediatric intestinal pseudoobstruction (PIPO) is the "tip of the iceberg" of the most severe gut motility disorders. In patients with PIPO, the impairment of gastrointestinal propulsive patterns is such as to result in progressive obstructive symptoms without evidence of mechanical causes. PIPO is an important cause of intestinal failure and affects growth and pubertal development. ⋯ Based on these promising results, we treated for the first time a 12-y-old patient affected by PIPO refractory to any therapeutic options to obtain intestinal decompression by PEG-J. We showed that PEG-J yielded sustained small bowel decompression in the reported PIPO patient with considerable improvement of both abdominal symptoms and nutritional status. The positive outcome of the present case provides a basis to test the actual efficacy PEG-J versus other therapeutic approaches to intestinal decompression in patients with PIPO.

We investigated whether measurement of muscle quantity/quality has additional predictive value for postoperative complications and long-term survival after gastrectomy for gastric cancer in patients with probable sarcopenia, as defined by the new European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 consensus. ⋯ The measurement of muscle quantity/quality has additional predictive value for postoperative complications, OS, and DFS after gastrectomy for gastric cancer in patients with probable sarcopenia.

This study evaluated the adequacy of micronutrient intake from the ketogenic diet (KD) with and without micronutrient supplementation according to age in Brazilian children and adolescents with refractory epilepsy undergoing KD treatment. ⋯ KD treatment did not provide adequate levels of the monitored micronutrients. The supplementation improved but did not prevent the inadequacy of micronutrients such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. The results highlight the importance of individual supplementation protocols and the need to monitor micronutrient intake according to age and sex.

In India, 50% of women of reproductive age, compared with 23% of men, have iron deficiency anemia. Extant research focuses on biological, not social, determinants of this disparity. ⋯ Anemia reduction interventions need to include examination of the whole social context to successfully increase iron supplement use and iron-rich food intake. Understanding how gender norms contribute to anemia could change the narrative from a biomedical to a social justice issue.

Depression and malnutrition are prevalent among people with coronary artery disease (CAD) and can affect their prognosis, but the relationship between depression and malnutrition and its co-effect on prognosis is not clear. We sought to explore that relationship and its effects. ⋯ Depression and malnutrition were found to be risk factors for adverse outcomes in people with CAD. People with CAD should pay attention to their emotional and nutritional statuses, and interventions must be timely and efficient.
