Longitudinal effect of nutritional intervention on body weight: A randomized controlled trial.
This study evaluates, in the medium and long term (12, 36, and 48 mo), the effect of an intervention to promote consumption of fruit and vegetables on the body weight of Brazilian primary health care users. ⋯ Participating in the primary health care service contributed to a small reduction in weight, and the intervention for consumption of fruit and vegetables did not enhance this effect. However, greater weight loss was observed in participants with obesity and those who adhered to the intervention.

Prospective cohort studies linking dietary patterns and hyperuricemia (HUA) are limited, especially in Asian populations. The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate the association between various dietary patterns and risk for HUA in a general adult population. ⋯ Dietary patterns rich in animal or sweet foods were positively associated with a higher risk for HUA, whereas the vegetable pattern was negatively associated.

The presence of phytosterols in vegetable-based lipid emulsions has been associated with alterations in the results of liver function tests (LFTs). Serum levels of phytosterols are under strict genetic control. T-allele carriers in rs41360247 and C-allele carriers in rs4245791 of ABCG8genes are associated with higher phytosterolemia. The objective of this study was to determine the association between these single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and LFT result alterations in an adult hospitalized population treated with parenteral nutrition. ⋯ With both SNPs rs41360247 and rs4245791, the alteration in parameters of liver function in adult patients with short-term parenteral nutrition is conditional.

This study examined the relationship between maternal exposure to stress during pregnancy and children's food preferences and diet in a population of low socioeconomic status. ⋯ Maternal exposure to stress during pregnancy could have long-term detrimental effects on dietary outcomes and thereby on health conditions related to diet. Prenatal care and preconception counseling could be critical to develop preventive strategies to improve public health.

Obesity is a challenge for bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) estimations of skeletal muscle and fat mass (FM), and none of the equations used for appendicular lean mass (ALM) have been developed for people with obesity. By using different equations and proposing a new equation, this study aimed to assess the estimation of FM and ALM using BIA compared with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as a reference method in a cohort of people with severe obesity. ⋯ BIA using multifrequency BIA in people with obesity is reliable enough for the estimation of FM, with good correlation and low bias to DXA. Regarding the estimation of ALM, BIA showed a good correlation with DXA, although it overestimated ALM, especially when proprietary equations were used. The use of equations developed using the same device improved the prediction, and our new equation showed a low bias for ALM.
