Several dietary patterns are associated with cardiovascular diseases. Traditional, Western, Mediterranean, and vegetarian are common dietary patterns, derived from principal component analysis (PCA) of dietary food intakes associated with cardiovascular diseases; however, these patterns were derived mostly from the diet habits of people in Western and European countries. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine dietary patterns linked with coronary artery disease (CAD) in the Nepalese population. ⋯ PCA-derived non-traditional dietary patterns can be a risk for developing CAD in Nepalese people. However, further cohort studies or randomized community trials are suggested to confirm our findings.

Obesity is a challenge for bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) estimations of skeletal muscle and fat mass (FM), and none of the equations used for appendicular lean mass (ALM) have been developed for people with obesity. By using different equations and proposing a new equation, this study aimed to assess the estimation of FM and ALM using BIA compared with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as a reference method in a cohort of people with severe obesity. ⋯ BIA using multifrequency BIA in people with obesity is reliable enough for the estimation of FM, with good correlation and low bias to DXA. Regarding the estimation of ALM, BIA showed a good correlation with DXA, although it overestimated ALM, especially when proprietary equations were used. The use of equations developed using the same device improved the prediction, and our new equation showed a low bias for ALM.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a leading cause of liver disease worldwide and includes nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to cirrhosis. Because NASH is associated with obesity severity, routine evaluation of obesity/body fat in clinical settings may help detect patients at risk. The aim of this study was to determine whether assessing body fat by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is superior to body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in assessing the risk for NASH. ⋯ All three methods, BIA, BMI, and WC, were comparable in assessing the risk for NASH. For practical purpose in clinical settings, using BMI is acceptable.

First reported case of pregnancy in a patient with ornithine aminotransferase deficiency.
Ornithine aminotransferase deficiency is a rare autosomalrecessive human inborn error of the metabolism resulting in hyperornithinemia and progressive chorioretinal degeneration (gyrate atrophy) with blindness. There are few reports in the literature and none, to our knowledge, that address this condition during pregnancy. We report on a novel case of ornithine aminotransferase deficiency during pregnancy that was managed actively with arginine and protein restriction with serial amino acid and fetal growth monitoring, resulting in an uncomplicated term live birth.

Lactoferrin supplementation is a promising strategy to prevent infections in neonates. Exploring whether maternal nutritional status in early pregnancy and maternal diet during lactation are associated with lactoferrin concentrations in mature human milk can provide early warning and allow timely adjustment. ⋯ Women with lower albumin levels in early pregnancy had higher levels of lactoferrin in mature breast milk. TSH was not related to lactoferrin levels. Intake of energy, protein, cholesterol, and vitamin A may have contributed to lactoferrin concentrations in milk, and egg intake was positively associated with lactoferrin.
