Previous gut microbiota has an effect on postprandial insulin response after intervention with yacon syrup as a source of fructooligosaccharides: a randomized, crossover, double-blind clinical trial.
The use of prebiotics has an effect on postprandial glucose and insulin concentrations; however, the interaction between the previous profile of the intestinal microbiota and the effect of supplementation with prebiotics is not clear. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of previous intestinal microbiota profile on the postprandial insulin response to yacon syrup, used as a source of fructooligosaccharides (FOSs), in young women. The product presents high levels of FOS. ⋯ The previous profile of the intestinal microbiota has an effect on the postprandial insulin response to FOSs, mainly in the phylum Actinobacteria and Bifidobacteriales order.

High plasma copper (Cu) and low zinc (Zn) levels have been associated with depression. However, most studies used low sample sizes and a cross-sectional design, and perinatal data are scarce. We investigated the possible association between pregnancy-specific psychological distress and the plasma CuZn ratio using a prospective design. ⋯ A higher CuZn plasma ratio is an independent determinant of developing pregnancy-specific distress symptoms throughout pregnancy, suggesting that micronutrients could be used as novel biomarkers for psychological distress research of perinatal mood disorders.

Malnutrition can play an important prognostic role in terms of survival in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In this clinical context, applying criteria defining malnutrition requires particular attention, especially in the initial stage of the disease. This article discusses the application of the most recent criteria used for the definition of malnutrition when applied to patients with ALS. ⋯ In conclusion, the monitoring of BMI, associated with body composition evaluation by bioimpedance measurement or specific formulas, could be a practicable approach to the diagnosis of malnutrition in patients with ALS. In addition, attention should be given to dietary intake (e.g., in patients with dysphagia) and excessive involuntary weight loss. On the other hand, as suggested by GLIM criteria, a single assessment of BMI resulting in <20 kg/m2 or <22 kg/m2 in patients aged <70 y and ≥70 y, respectively, should always be considered a sign of malnutrition.

Alzheimer's disease is a worldwide public health problem. However, the treatment method and treatment effects are limited. ⋯ We summarized the role of diet, nutrient supplementation, and microbioecologics in cognitive decline and found that interventions such as modified Mediterranean-ketogenic diet, nuts, vitamin B, and Bifidobacterium breve A1 are beneficial to cognition protection. Eating, rather than just taking medicine, is suggested to be an effective treatment method for older adults at risk for Alzheimer's disease.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition characterized by multiorgan dysfunction due to an exaggerated host response to infection associated with a homeostatic failure. In sepsis, different interventions, aimed at improving clinical outcomes, have been tested over the past decades. Among these most recent strategies, intravenous high-dose micronutrients (vitamins and/or trace elements) have been investigated. ⋯ The best nutrient combination still needs to be determined, based on the antioxidant micronutrient network and the multiple interactions among different vitamins and trace elements. In addition, a better understanding of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles of intravenous thiamine is needed. Future well-designed and powered clinical trials are urgently warranted before any specific recommendations can be made regarding supplementation in the critical care setting.
