Postpartum weight retention is a short- and long-term risk factor for overweight and obesity in women. The aim of this study was to evaluate dietary patterns and their effects on postpartum weight retention among lactating women in south central China. ⋯ This study identified two dietary patterns among lactating women in south central China. A diet characterized by high intake of fresh vegetables (non-leafy), soy milk, and bacteria and algae was negatively associated with postpartum weight retention.

The aim of this study was to determine whether modified low- and high-risk Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) scores (2 versus >2, respectively) were independently predictive of health economic outcomes. ⋯ Outcomes of hospitalized patients with MST 2 were not significantly different from those with an MST >2. This suggests that patients at both lower and higher risk for malnutrition (based on MST scores of 2 versus ≥3) were similar in terms of LOS and 30-d readmission rates. To avoid overlooking cases of malnutrition risk, the validated cutoff scores for the MST should be consistently implemented. Training that is consistent with the validated MST is recommended rather than attempting to reduce the case burden by "raising the bar" and attempting to classify patients with an MST = 2 as "low risk."

Dietary and energetic restrictions are endowed with protection against experimental injuries. However, a drop in cell energetic status under a critical threshold may prevent protection, as previously observed for livers isolated from rat donors undergoing 18-h fasting versus feeding. The aim of this study was to further explore, in the latter model, links between nutritional status, energy availability, and protection through lengthening of rat fasting to 24 h and withdrawal of energy sources from perfusions. ⋯ Liver protections are obviously influenced by nutritional status in a way that is parallel to hepatic energy mobilization capacities (glycogen plus autophagy) with a decreased order of protection: Fed >24-h fasted >18-h fasted >24-h fasted + 3-methyladenine livers. By showing that autophagy induction limits starvation-induced cytolysis, the present work supports the emerging view that autophagy inducers might improve health benefits of diet restriction.

Activity-based anorexia (ABA) in rodents is a behavioral model of anorexia nervosa, characterized by negative energy balance, hyperactivity, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota. Gut bacteria are known to produce energy substrates including adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and acetate. The aim of this study was to determine whether ABA alters the proteome of gut microbiota relevant to ATP and acetate production. ⋯ The data revealed that starvation in food-restricted and ABA mice induced proteome modification in gut bacteria favoring ATP production mainly by the order Clostridiales. However, this did not result in increased total ATP-production capacity by gut microbiota. These changes can be interpreted as an adaptation of specific gut bacteria to the host malnutrition beneficial for host survival.
