Acute inflammatory and metabolic effect of high fructose intake in normal-weight women: A randomized, double-masked, crossover trial.
We aimed to evaluate the acute effect of a fructose-rich single meal on metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: This single-center, double-masked, randomized crossover trial recruited females aged 20 to 47 with a normal body mass index and was conducted at Hospital das Clínicas (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil). Participants received a standardized meal with either sucrose, glucose, or a fructose overload. Blood samples were collected after overnight fasting (baseline) and at 30, 60, 120, and 240 minutes postprandial. Serum levels of glucose, triglycerides (primary outcome), total cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, adiponectin, leptin, resistin, interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17, interferon-gamma, tumor necrosis factor, eotaxin, and total blood leukocytes were measured. ⋯ Our findings indicate that a fructose-rich single meal leads to a more significant increase in triglyceride and leukocyte concentrations compared to glucose and sucrose in healthy women. These findings support concerns regarding the potential inflammatory and metabolic dysfunction associated with frequent consumption of high-fructose meals.

Does stress compromise fruit and vegetable intake? A randomized controlled trial testing a model with planning as a mediator and stress as a moderator.
Individuals experiencing higher stress levels tend to consume fewer fruits and vegetables compared to their less stressed counterparts. Thus, to promote fruit and vegetable (FV) consumption, action planning has been proven effective in translating behavioral intentions into actual dietary behaviors. This study aims to evaluate a 7-day intervention designed to improve FV planning and intake, while also examining the role of stress. ⋯ These findings confirm the positive impact of the planning intervention on improving FV intake, particularly for individuals with low stress levels, and highlight stress as a barrier to health behavior change that warrants further attention in future studies.

Nutritional support after hospital discharge reduces long-term mortality in patients after gastric cancer surgery: Secondary analysis of a prospective randomized trial.
Nutritional support after hospital discharge was found to enhance the nutritional condition of patients after cancer surgery. However, the effect of such support on long-term clinical outcomes is controversial. We thus investigated the effect of nutritional support after hospital discharge on long-term clinical outcomes in patients after gastric cancer surgery. ⋯ Nutritional support after hospital discharge reduced long-term mortality and improved handgrip strength among patients at nutritional risk after gastric cancer surgery. The current investigation provides evidence for the recommendation of nutritional support, for post-surgery patients after hospital discharge, in cancer management guidelines.

Long-term clinical efficacy of dietary fiber supplementation in middle-aged and elderly prediabetic patients.
Dietary fiber (DF) can be separated from food and convenient to take, and has an important role in diabetes prevention, but long-term intervention data are lacking. This study evaluated the long-term benefits of DF supplementation on body composition, glucose-lipid metabolism, and clinical regression in middle-aged and elderly patients with prediabetes. ⋯ DF supplementation can reduce the degree of central obesity, the levels of FPG and 2h PG, and the incidence of diabetes in middle-aged and older patients with prediabetes.

The effect of a bodybuilding carbohydrate-loading protocol on anthropometry: Preliminary findings from a randomized crossover trial.
To acutely enhance muscle size and definition, carbohydrate (CHO)-loading protocols are commonly implemented by bodybuilders in the week before competition. This study sought to evaluate the effects of a bodybuilding CHO-loading protocol on anthropometry. Four dieting males engaging in resistance training (RT) with very low body fat participated in this randomized crossover trial. ⋯ Individual differences in response to each phase were also observed. Group level changes seemingly favor CHO-loading; however, it is difficult to judge whether these changes are practically meaningful as they may not be large enough to exceed measurement error and daily biological fluctuations. Before implementation, coaches and competitors should consider individualizing protocols through precompetition testing and visually assessing changes in physique.
