Multicenter Study Observational Study
Serum adiponectin concentration in relation to macronutrient and food intake in young Japanese women.
Little is known about the relation of modifiable dietary factors to circulating adiponectin concentrations, particularly in young adults and non-Western populations. The aim of this study was to determine the association between macronutrient and food intake and serum adiponectin concentration in a group of young Japanese women. ⋯ In a group of young Japanese women, higher coffee intake was independently associated with higher serum adiponectin concentration.

The discovery of visfatin has great potential to significantly enhance our understanding of impaired fasting glucose and diabetes mellitus. The aim of the present study was to explore the relation of visfatin concentrations to cardiovascular risk factors and serum adipocytokine concentrations in patients with impaired fasting glucose. ⋯ Only TNF-α is related in an independent way to serum visfatin levels.

Prevalence of chronic liver diseases, including liver cirrhosis, is increasing worldwide. The nutritional state assessment in these patients is complicated, and besides anthropometry is based on several other tools in order to be more accurate. Specific dietary recommendations are needed in patients with chronic liver diseases in order to help prevent and treat liver decompensation because malnutrition is an independent predictor of mortality. This review focuses on essential aspects in the nutritional assessment of cirrhotic patients and some general recommendations for their treatment.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Influence of a nutritional intervention on dietary intake and quality of life in cancer patients: a randomized controlled trial.
Weight loss is common in patients with malignant tumors and it can adversely affect quality of life and survival. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of a nutritional intervention in cancer patients in an outpatient setting. ⋯ Individual nutritional counseling significantly and positively influenced energy and protein intake, but did not improve nutritional or physical outcome or quality of life. These results indicate that nutritional therapy alone is of limited efficacy in cancer patients whose nutritional status has already deteriorated.
