The use of anthropometric measurements to estimate the percentage of body fat (%BF) is easy and inexpensive. However, the accuracy of these methods in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD) has not been explored. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of skinfold-based models, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC) in estimations of %BF using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) as the reference method in individuals with 21OHD. ⋯ In children and adolescents with 21OHD, %BF as estimated by skinfold measurements was associated more strongly with DXA-assessed %BF than both BMI and WC. However, still, the skinfold-based assessment underestimated DXA %BF and showed moderate agreement.

The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of maternal dietary energy types on the mRNA expressions of the placental nutrient transporter and intrauterine fetal growth and to examine whether altered intrauterine fetal growth could be associated with different gene expressions relating to fetal energy metabolism and DNA methylation. ⋯ Collectively, these results demonstrated that intrauterine fetal growth could be affected by different energy intake types through placenta nutrient transporter gene expressions, and different fetal growths were associated with altered fetal genes related to DNA methylation and energy metabolism.

Caffeine is a constituent of many non-alcoholic beverages. Pharmacological actions of caffeine include the antagonism of adenosine receptors and the inhibition of phosphodiesterase activity. The A₁ adenosine receptors present on adipocytes are involved in the control of fatty acid uptake and lipolysis. In this study, the effects of caffeine were characterized in a diet-induced metabolic syndrome in rats. ⋯ Decreased total body fat, concurrent with increased plasma lipid concentrations, reflects the lipolytic effects of caffeine in adipocytes, likely owing to the caffeine antagonism of A₁ adenosine receptors on adipocytes.

Impact of preoperative nutritional support on clinical outcome in abdominal surgical patients at nutritional risk.
This multicenter, prospective cohort study evaluated the effect of preoperative nutritional support in abdominal surgical patients at nutritional risk as defined by the Nutritional Risk Screening Tool 2002 (NRS-2002). ⋯ This finding suggests that preoperative nutritional support is beneficial to patients with an NRS score at least 5 by lowering the complication rate.

The inflammatory process seen in multiple sclerosis is due to an excess production of proinflammatory cytokines interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, interferons, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, HMGB1 (high mobility group B1), and, possibly, a reduction in antiinflammatory cytokines IL-10, IL-4, and transforming growth factor-β that leads to increased secretion of reactive oxygen species, including nitric oxide, resulting in neuronal damage. It is suggested that failure of production of adequate amounts of resolution-inducing molecules lipoxins, resolvins, and protectins that suppress inflammation and reactive oxygen species production, enhance wound healing, and have neuroprotective properties results in inappropriate inflammation and delay in the healing/repair process, and so neuronal damage continues, as seen in multiple sclerosis. Hence, methods designed to enhance the production and/or administration of lipoxins, resolvins, and protectins may form a new approach in the prevention and treatment of multiple sclerosis and other similar autoimmune diseases.
