This study aimed to evaluate all known risk factors, from perinatal to adolescence and identify those predominantly related with prospective BMI deterioration. ⋯ The most predominant risk factors influencing children's prospective BMI deterioration were parental BMI and country economic classification as compared to perinatal. These findings should guide public health initiatives aiming to tackle the childhood obesity epidemic and social inequalities on a European level.

Nutritional status and growth is well associated with disease outcomes and lung function in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Current dietary guidelines for the management of CF suggest a high-calorie, high-fat diet. Pancreatic insufficiency (PI) is present in most patients and contributes to malabsorption and malnutrition, but a considerable number of patients have pancreatic sufficiency (PS). The aim of this study was to compare weight status, clinical characteristics, and dietary intake of children with CF, with PS or PI. ⋯ Weight status, dietary intake, pulmonary function, and lipid profile differed significantly in children with CF by pancreatic status. Nevertheless, the percentage of overweight and obesity was higher in children with PS than in those with PI. To avoid obesity, dietary recommendations for a high-calorie, high-fat diet should be reconsidered in patients with CF regarding their pancreatic status.

Comparison of the effects of a phospholipid-enhanced fish oil versus krill oil product on plasma levels of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids after acute administration: A randomized, double-blind, crossover study.
This randomized, double-blind, crossover study evaluated the bioavailability of eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids (EPA+DHA) in a phospholipid-enhanced fish oil (PEFO) product versus a krill oil (KO) product (337 versus 206 mg EPA+DHA/1 g capsule) in healthy adults (N = 24). The aim of this study was to assess the plasma levels of EPA, DHA, and EPA+DHA following a single capsule of PEFO versus KO products in healthy adult men and women. ⋯ Absorption of EPA+DHA from the two products was similar, but the absorption profiles differed (higher and earlier peak for PEFO).

The role of the Mediterranean diet in modulating the gut microbiome: A review of current evidence.
The Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is recognized as one of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Intangible Cultural Heritage assets associated with lower rates of cardiometabolic diseases; lower prevalence of cancer, Alzheimer's disease, depression, and onset of inflammatory bowel disease; and more generally low-grade inflammation and mortality risks. Beyond being an input source of beneficial micronutrients, it recently has been discovered that the MedDiet plays a role in a more complex human microbiome-mediated mechanism. An interesting hypothesis suggests a bidirectional relationship between the MedDiet and the gut microbiome, where gut microbiota assembly and biosynthetic capacity are responsive to the diet; in return, the microbiome-reachable nutrients shape and modulate the microbiome toward a characteristic probiotic state. ⋯ As more detailed omic-based studies take place, more evidence on the MedDiet as a core generic probiotic microbiome modulation strategy surface. However, individual-specific microbiome compositions might impose personal variations on the diet outcome. Therefore, a prospective strategy of a fine-tuned precision nutrition approach might deliver optimized benefits of the MedDiet.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is highly prevalent in the bariatric population but not all patients develop liver fibrosis. Considering that fibrosis may affect clinical outcomes, it is important to assess and treat contributing factors. In this population, it is not clear whether dietary intake is a contributor. The objective was to determine the relationship between dietary intake components and liver fibrosis before and 1 y after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). ⋯ In bariatric patients before surgery, higher age, alanine transaminase, and total calorie and lower copper intakes were independent risk factors associated with liver fibrosis. These relationships were no longer observed after RYGB, likely due to the effect of surgery on weight and similar postsurgery diet among patients.
