Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyThe antimicrobial effect of Iseganan HCl oral solution in patients receiving stomatotoxic chemotherapy: analysis from a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, phase III clinical trial.
Cytotoxic chemotherapy induces changes in the oral microflora that may cause oral and systemic infections in myelosuppressed cancer patients. These complications prompted us to assess the antimicrobial activity of a topical Iseganan HCl mouthwash vs. placebo on the aerobic and facultatively anaerobic oral flora in these patients. ⋯ Topical Iseganan HCl significantly reduces the total oral aerobic bacterial, streptococcal, and yeast load. Its potential as an oral antimicrobial agent in preventing these types of infections is clear.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEvaluation of the clinical efficacy of a betaine-containing mouthwash and an intraoral device for the treatment of dry mouth.
An evaluation is made of the efficacy and safety of an intraoral device with a betaine (BET)-containing mouthwash in treating xerostomia. ⋯ The daily use of a night guard and BET-containing mouthwash was seen to improve dry mouth during the 4-week duration of the study.

Comparative StudyInterleukin-2, interleukin-6 and T regulatory cells in peripheral blood of patients with Behçet's disease and recurrent aphthous ulcerations.
One of the factors involved in the pathogenesis of Behçet disease (BD) and recurrent aphthous ulcerations (RAU) is a cell-mediated immune response in which several cytokines (interleukin-2, interleukin-6) and T regulatory cell (T reg cell) population seem to play a major role. The aim of this study was to measured the interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels and analysis of CD4(+) CD25(+) Foxp-3(+) Treg cells in peripheral blood from patients with BD and RAU. In addition; we also analysed peripheral blood from healthy subjects for comparison. ⋯ These results indicate that CD4(+) CD25(bright) T regulatory cells may be contributing factor in the pathogenesis of BD and RAU.

The use of tobacco-free betel-quid in conjunction with alcohol/tobacco impacts early-onset age and carcinoma distribution for upper aerodigestive tract cancer.
Recognition of how risk factors affect the age when cancers are first diagnosed may help to establish more appropriate cancer screening and preventive strategies. ⋯ Tobacco-free betel-quid, in conjunction with alcohol and/or tobacco consumption, impacts early cancer occurrence for specific UADT-SCC and influences tumor site incidence pattern of these neoplasms.

Comparative StudySalivary osmolality and hydration status in children with cerebral palsy.
Unstimulated whole salivary parameters have been identified as potential markers of hydration status. Reduced salivary flow rate and increased salivary osmolality have been shown to be useful to identify dehydration, even when minimal loss of body water occurs. This study aimed to evaluate whether unstimulated salivary flow rate and salivary osmolality from individuals with cerebral palsy correlate with plasma and urine osmolality. ⋯ Cerebral palsy children seem to present impaired adequate hydration status. Since the possible hypohydration condition may be reflected in saliva fluid, which could compromise the protective function exerted by saliva, the earlier this condition is identified the greater the chances of administering preventive measures. Moreover, salivary osmolality is a reliable parameter that reflects changes in plasma and urine.
