Circulating eNampt and resistin as a proinflammatory duet predicting independently mortality in critically ill patients with sepsis: A prospective observational study.
The adipocytokines eNampt and resistin are involved in the regulation of inflammation exerting pro-inflammatory actions. Our aim was to jointly investigate whether circulating eNampt and resistin, and their kinetics predict 28-day mortality of sepsis. ⋯ Circulating eNampt and resistin, and their kinetics may represent useful diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in critically ill septic patients. More prospective studies are needed to elucidate their ontological and pathophysiological role in sepsis.

The complex neuroimmunological interactions mediated by chemokines are suggested to be responsible for the development of neuropathic pain. The lack of knowledge regarding the detailed pathomechanism of neuropathy is one reason for the lack of optimally efficient therapies. Recently, several lines of evidence indicated that expression of CCR2 is increased in spinal cord neurons and microglial cells after peripheral nerve injury. ⋯ Additionally, we showed for the first time that intrathecal injection of CCL2 and CCL7 neutralizing antibodies not only attenuated CCI-induced pain-related behaviors in mice but also augmented the analgesia induced by morphine and buprenorphine. In vitro studies suggest that both microglia and astrocytes are an important cellular sources of the examined chemokines. Our results revealed the crucial roles of CCL2 and CCL7, but not CCL12, in neuropathic pain development and indicated that pharmacological modulation of these factors may serve as a potential therapeutic target for new (co)analgesics.

Adiponectin is a hormone that together with its receptors modulates a number of metabolic processes including gluconeogenesis and lipid catabolism. It belongs to the C1QTNF (complement C1q tumor necrosis factor-related protein) family, which has a variety of members with high amino acid sequence homology and overlapping functions. Concentration of adiponectin in blood is inversely correlated with body fat percentage and cardiac risk factors like blood pressure and CRP (C-reactive protein) level. Studies have identified the existence of a cardiac adiponectin system. However, little is known about the role of this system in the pathogenesis of autoimmune myocarditis. Thus, we have studied the involvement of adiponectin in the development of this autoimmune disorder in a mouse model of experimental autoimmune myocarditis (EAM). ⋯ Our study reveals that the absence of adiponectin did not lead to a significantly increased impairment of cardiac function and was also unlikely to be compensated by its receptors or other C1QTNF family members in the murine model of EAM. Here, other synergistic or redundant effects might play a role and must be investigated in further studies to understand the role and function of adiponectin in autoimmune myocarditis.

The following study investigated the serum adiponectin, chemerin and vaspin levels and their relationship with body mass index (BMI), glucose and lipid metabolism in girls with Turner Syndrome (TS). ⋯ Elevated adiponectin and chemerin levels and significantly reduced vaspin were found in girls with TS. Puberty or estrogen replacement therapy may reduce adiponectin in girls with TS.

Potential prognostic biomarkers for patients with sepsis have yet to be identified. The present study evaluated the prognostic value of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) levels in patients with sepsis. ⋯ FGF21 could serve as a new prognostic biomarker for sepsis survival.
