Review Meta AnalysisEffect of remote ischemic preconditioning on postoperative acute kidney injury among patients undergoing cardiac and vascular interventions: a meta-analysis.
It is currently controversial whether remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) reduces the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients undergoing cardiovascular interventions. The main objective of this meta-analysis was to investigate whether RIPC provides renal protection for patients undergoing cardiac or vascular surgery. We searched the PubMed database (1966-Oct 2015), Embase database (1966-Oct 2015), Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials Database and Open Grey. ⋯ There were no differences in the changes in AKI biomarkers, use of renal replacement therapy or in-hospital mortality between the two groups. Remote ischemic preconditioning may decrease the occurrence of AKI in cardiovascular surgery patients. Since studies included have a significant heterogeneity, meta-analyses using a stricter inclusion criteria are needed to clarify the renoprotection effect of RIPC.

Review Meta AnalysisUrine interleukin-18 in prediction of acute kidney injury: a systemic review and meta-analysis.
Interleukin-18 (IL-18) mediates ischemic acute tubular necrosis; it has been proved as a rapid, reliable, and affordable test marker for the early detection of acute kidney injury (AKI), but its predictive accuracy varies greatly. ⋯ Urine IL-18 holds promise as a biomarker in the prediction of AKI but has only moderate diagnostic value.

Meta AnalysisA population-based approach for the definition of chronic kidney disease: the CKD Prognosis Consortium.
The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) foundation promoted the establishment of the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Prognosis Consortium to meta-analyze the association of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and albuminuria with incidence of various outcomes in samples of general populations from all over the world. ⋯ Data support the threshold of 60 ml/min for CKD definition but suggest that eGFR in the range 60-74 ml/min could represent the early stages of CKD. This first set of results of the CKD Prognosis Consortium represents an important step in the evidence-based definition of CKD. Conclusions should be reevaluated with eGFR calculation by equations less biased for normal-high eGFR.
