Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Cost-effectiveness of balloon kyphoplasty in patients with symptomatic vertebral compression fractures in a UK setting.
Balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) is a procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). We developed a cost-effectiveness model to evaluate BKP in United Kingsdom patients with hospitalised VCFs and estimated the cost-effectiveness of BKP compared to non-surgical management. The results indicate that BKP provides a cost-effective alternative for treating these patients. ⋯ In conclusion, the results indicate that BKP provides a cost-effective alternative for treating patients with hospitalised VCFs in a UK-setting.

Multicenter Study
Burden of hip fracture on inpatient care: a before and after population-based study.
We estimated the excess hospital expenditure attributable to osteoporotic hip fracture (HF) within a population of 6,019 patients. Post-fracture excess of hospital days was 23.1, including 22.7 days in rehabilitation care. HF might result from a patient's pre-fracture poor health status rather than predispose to a worsening of such pre-existing conditions. ⋯ Osteoporotic HF represents a pronounced excess expenditure in hospital, which is mostly linked to rehabilitation care. Considering that utilization of inpatient acute care was quite similar before and after the index stay, HF might result from a patient's pre-fracture poor health status, rather than predispose to a worsening of such pre-existing conditions.
