Spinal cord injury causes severe bone loss. We report osteoclast resorption with severe trabecular and cortical bone loss, decreased bone mineral apposition, and growth plate abnormalities in a rodent model of contusion spinal cord injury. These findings will help elucidate the mechanisms of osteoporosis following neurological trauma. ⋯ Contusion SCI results in a rapid bone loss that is the result of increased bone resorption and decreased bone formation.

The short-term association between wrist-fracture history and future fracture has not been simultaneously compared between younger and older postmenopausal women. This 3-year follow-up study of 158,940 women showed a similar future fracture risk in younger and older women with wrist-fracture history. ⋯ Prior wrist fracture strongly predicts three-year risk of any future osteoporotic fracture for older and younger postmenopausal women, independent of baseline BMD and common osteoporosis risk factors. More consideration should be given to evaluating and managing osteoporosis in younger and older women with a history of wrist fracture, independent of their BMD.

RANKL was administered continuously to rats for 28 days to investigate its potential as a disease model for the skeletal system. Bone turnover rates, bone material, structural and mechanical properties were evaluated. RANKL infusion caused overall skeletal complications comparable to those in high bone-turnover conditions, such as postmenopausal osteoporosis. ⋯ Continuous RANKL infusion caused general detrimental effects on rat skeleton. These changes are comparable to those commonly observed in high-turnover bone diseases such as postmenopausal osteoporosis.

Risedronate for prevention of bone mineral density loss in patients receiving high-dose glucocorticoids: a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial.
This 6-month randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial shows that risedronate is well tolerated and effective in improving lumbar spine BMD and reducing loss of BMD at the hips in patients receiving high-dose prednisolone. ⋯ Risedronate improves spinal BMD in users of high-dose glucocorticoids.

We assessed vitamin D nutritional status in unselected consecutive patients seeking advice on osteoporosis. The prevalence of vitamin D depletion ranged from 15-72% depending upon the cut-off levels used for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and the prevalence did not change over the 5 years of the study. ⋯ The prevalence of vitamin D depletion in patients seeking advice for osteoporosis is high and did not change over the 5 years of the study.
