Dietary calcium deficiency may increase fracture risk. In girls, 29.4% of fracture cases and 11.8% of controls without fracture had a history of milk-free diet. The odds ratio (OR) for fracture with a milk-free diet in girls was 4.6, p < 0.01. In boys, 23% of cases and 19% of controls had a history of a milk-free diet; OR = 1.3, NS). A milk-free diet due to cow's milk allergy is associated with increased fracture risk in girls. ⋯ Cow's milk allergy is associated with increased fracture risk in girls. Whether this association is due to the illness, calcium deficit or a deficit in other milk nutrients is uncertain. These data suggest that the contribution of milk-free diet to fracture liability among children and adolescents is modest.

We describe complementary and alternative medicine use (CAM) in 360 patients attending osteoporosis clinics. Of these patients, 57% were CAM users. Predictors of CAM use included lower mental quality of life, younger age and higher education. Less than half of CAM use was disclosed to physicians, despite potential adverse interactions. ⋯ Patients attending osteoporosis clinics frequently use CAM. Conceptually, the predictors of use identified in this study may fit into a socio-behavioral model that helps explain why people turn to CAM. Physicians may need to elicit a history of CAM use more vigilantly so as to better screen for possible adverse clinical interactions.

Interferential and horizontal therapies in chronic low back pain due to multiple vertebral fractures: a randomized, double blind, clinical study.
Chronic low back pain due to multiple vertebral fractures is of difficult management. Electrical nerve stimulation is frequently used, but its efficacy has never been properly evaluated. In a randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial, we have shown that both interferential currents and horizontal therapy are more effective than placebo for functional. ⋯ This randomized double-blind controlled study provides the first evidence that IFT and HT therapy are significantly effective in alleviating both pain and disability in patients with CBPMF.

Telomere length decreases with age and is associated with osteoblast senescence. In 2,150 unselected women, leukocyte telomere length was significantly correlated with bone mineral density. Clinical osteoporosis was associated with shorter telomeres, suggesting that telomere length can be used as a marker of bone aging. ⋯ Shortened leukocyte telomere length is independently associated with a decrease in BMD and the presence of osteoporosis in women. Our data provide evidence that leukocyte telomere length could be a marker of biological aging of bone.

Using data from NORA, we used 18 potential risk factors in a classification and regression tree analysis to build two algorithms. These algorithms correctly identified postmenopausal women between the ages of 50 and 64 years who were at the highest risk of osteoporotic fracture within 36 months. ⋯ NORA-based algorithms may be useful for health care providers to guide further assessment and management decisions to prevent fractures in younger postmenopausal women.
