Variability in diagnosing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease using standard and proposed diagnostic criteria.
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is a rapidly progressive dementia with a median survival of 2-14 months. The diagnosis can only be made accurately by biopsy/autopsy. However, this is not always feasible or desirable. Thus, diagnostic criteria have been proposed by UCSF, European MRI-CJD Consortium, and WHO. We will compare these criteria. ⋯ This study illustrates the variability in diagnosing CJD and emphasizes the diagnostic utility of neuroimaging. It also highlights false-positives that occur with neuroimaging.

Ectopic pituitary adenoma associated with an empty sella: a case report and review of the literature.
A case of ectopic pituitary adenoma in the sphenoid sinus associated with an empty sella is reported. The coexistence of an ectopic pituitary adenoma and an empty sella is quite rare. ⋯ In the present case, the hypointense line that coated the pituitary gland was clearly demonstrated on 3-tesla T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. The hypointense line is considered to be the pituitary capsule and was critical in diagnosing this rare entity.

Lesion studies (both patients and nonhuman animals) and functional neuroimaging studies of normal, healthy subjects provide complementary, but different types of information. This article suggests that both study types are necessary for deriving inferentially sound conclusions regarding the neural basis of cognition.

Cortical microinfarcts (CMIs) are detected as small foci restricted to the cerebral cortex in autopsy brains. CMIs are thought to be caused by cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) in the elderly and may be a risk for dementia. We aimed to visualize CMIs, which remain invisible on conventional MRI, using double inversion recovery (DIR) and 3-dimensional fluid attenuated inversion recovery (3D-FLAIR) on 3-Tesla MRI. ⋯ DIR and 3D-FLAIR images may open a way to visualize CMIs.
