Randomized Controlled TrialEpidural anesthesia using a 0,75% ropivacaine and subarachnoid anesthesia with a 0,5% bupivacaine associated or not with clonidine in hemorrhoidectomies.
To study the safety and efficiency of two anesthetic blockages in hemorrhoidectomy and the effect of clonidine on analgesia. ⋯ The subarachnoid anesthesia with a 0,5% bupivacaine with clonidine, showed better analgesia comparing with the peridural anesthesia with a 0,75% ropivacaine with or without clonidine, however all were safe and efficient. The clonidine aided on the decreasing of pain when subarachnoid anesthesia was used.

Effects of prone and supine position on oxygenation and inflammatory mediator in a hydrochloric acid-induced lung dysfunction in rats.
To compare the effectiveness of mechanical ventilation of supine versus prone position in hydrochloric acid (HCl)-induced lung dysfunction. ⋯ The use of prone position improved oxygenation, but did not reduce TNF-alpha in BAL upon lung dysfunction induced by HCl.

Phenobarbital influence on neuromuscular block produced by rocuronium in rats.
To evaluate in vitro and in vivo neuromuscular blockade produced by rocuronium in rats treated with Phenobarbital and to determine cytochrome P450 and cytochrome b5 concentrations in hepatic microsomes. ⋯ Phenobarbital alone did not compromise neuromuscular transmission. It produced enzymatic induction, and neuromuscular blockade in vivo produced by rocuronium was potentiated by phenobarbital.

The effects of positive end-expiratory pressure in alveolar recruitment during mechanical ventilation in pigs.
To evaluate the effects of alveolar recruitment based on mean airway pressure (MAP) on pig lungs submitted to thoracotomy through blood gas exchange and hemodynamic parameters. ⋯ PEEP adjusted to MAP of 20 cmH2O resulted in best arterial oxygenation, without compromising the venous return, as opposed to MAP of 25 cmH2O, which caused deterioration of gas exchange, hemodynamics and respiratory mechanic.

Blunt abdominal trauma with small bowel injury: are isolated lesions riskier than associated lesions?
The objective of this study was to compare patients with "isolated" blunt small bowel injury (SBI) to patients with multiple intra-abdominal injuries and analyze whether delayed laparotomy affected outcome. ⋯ The presence of associated intra-abdominal injuries significantly affected the presentation and time to diagnosis of patients with SBI, but not morbidity or mortality. Delayed surgical treatment in the isolated cases was not associated with an increased incidence of complications. Patients inflicted with more severe associated injuries were less likely to survive the trauma.
