We measured platelet 3H-imipramine binding parameters in 16 subjects affected by different types of mental deficiency, all characterized by hyperactive and/or aggressive behaviour, and in 16 healthy controls. The patients had a lower maximum binding capacity than the controls, with no difference in Kd, irrespectively of the type of mental disorder. These findings suggest a link between 5-HT disturbances, reflected by reduced imipramine binding sites, and behavioural dyscontrol, expressed as hyperactivity and aggression.

Personality disorders 2-5 years after treatment: a prospective follow-up study.
Ninety-seven patients consecutively admitted to a day unit specializing in the treatment of personality disorders were included in a prospective follow-up study. At follow-up an average of 3 years after index admission, patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) displayed a moderate symptom reduction and a fair global outcome. Patients with schizotypal personality disorder (STP) showed a similar reduction in symptoms but retained relatively poor global functioning. ⋯ STP individuals were the least socially adjusted, employed and self-supporting of all diagnostic subgroups. STP and BPD individuals had far more inpatient treatment in the follow-up period than other groups. The overall suicide rate was low compared with most similar studies.

Selection of patients who attempted suicide for psychiatric consultation.
A total of 1018 self-poisoned patients were treated during one year (1983) at the emergency room of Helsinki University Central Hospital for 1207 suicide attempts; 46% were left without psychiatric consultation. Women were consulted more frequently than men. Patients with previous psychiatric treatment were referred more often for psychiatric consultation. ⋯ Somatic seriousness was also less severe in this group. It was assumed that those left without consultation were not in mortal danger. There were no differences in the suicide mortality of these 2 groups during a 5-year follow-up.

Eleven patients with major affective disorder (DSM-III) were investigated after a mean of 6.7 years on lithium prophylaxis and reinvestigated 7 years later, at which time they had discontinued lithium for a mean 2.3 years. Outcome was assessed by the Comprehensive Psychopathological Rating Scale, by relapse frequencies, by need for psychotropic medication and for inpatient treatment. ⋯ Although the relapse frequencies remained largely unchanged, a significantly increased number of inpatient treatment days indicated considerably more severe episodes after the discontinuation of lithium. Long periods without lithium were associated with higher doses of neuroleptic drugs.

Comparative StudyThe effect of the detoxification of domestic gas in Switzerland on the suicide rate.
An examination of suicide rates in Switzerland during the period when domestic gas was detoxified indicated that, not only did the use of domestic gas for suicide decline, but so did the overall suicide rate, indicating that people did not switch to alternative methods for suicide, contrary to a claim made by the late Erwin Stengel.
