Intrinsic or Nonintrinsic End-stage Liver Disease and Its Association With Thromboelastography-based Coagulation States in Patients Undergoing Liver Transplantation: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
Perioperative coagulation management in liver transplantation recipients is challenging. Viscoelastic testing with rotational thromboelastography (TEG) can help quantify hemostatic profiles. The current work aimed to investigate whether the etiology of end-stage liver disease, pretransplant disease severity, or pretransplant thrombotic or bleeding complications are associated with specific TEG patterns. ⋯ Liver transplantation candidates with intrinsic liver disease tend to exhibit hypocoagulable TEG patterns, while nonintrinsic disease is associated with hypercoagulability. Increasing end-stage liver disease severity, as evidenced by increasing MELD scores and higher Child-Pugh classification, was also associated with hypocoagulable TEG patterns.

Association Between Single-Injection Regional Analgesia and Postoperative Pain in Cardiac Surgery Patients: A Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study.
Effective pain control after cardiac surgery may facilitate recovery. This study aimed to assess the use and association of ultrasound-guided single-injection chest wall blocks with liposomal bupivacaine on postoperative pain scores and short-term opioid requirements after cardiothoracic surgery at a single institution. ⋯ In this retrospective study, the implementation of single-shot chest wall nerve blocks with liposomal bupivacaine was not associated with decreased postoperative pain scores or opioid consumption at 72 hours in select cardiac surgical patients at one institution.

Prediction of Acute Kidney Injury After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft From Preoperative Serum Uric Acid.
To examine the association of an elevated level of uric acid (UA) in the bloodstream with an increased likelihood of acute kidney injury (AKI) following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery. ⋯ There is a relationship between preoperative blood UA level and the occurrence of AKI following CABG surgery.

Evaluating the Prevalence of Cardiac Surgery-associated Acute Kidney Injury After Septal Myectomy Combined With Concomitant Procedures in Obstructive Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
Hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) may be treated by septal myectomy. Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) is a common complication, but little is known about its incidence after septal myectomy. The objectives of this work were to evaluate the prevalence of CSA-AKI after septal myectomy and identify potential perioperative and phenotype-related factors contributing to CSA-AKI. ⋯ CSA-AKI is a common complication after septal myectomy but was transient, and kidney function recovered in all patients.

Epidemiology and Triggers of Severe Perioperative Anaphylaxis: An 8-Year Single-Center Study.
To determine the features, rescue measures, outcomes, re-allergic reactions, and independent risk factors associated with severe anaphylaxis during surgery. ⋯ Perioperative severe anaphylaxis is a rare but life-threatening complication. Previous allergic history, cisatracurium, hydroxyethyl starch 130/0.4, and allogeneic plasma may be the independent triggers. Early diagnosis of anaphylaxis and the timely administration of epinephrine are critical to allergic treatment. Avoiding exposure to allergens is effective for preventing severe allergic responses and the efficacy of glucocorticoids and antihistamines is controversial.
