Molecular signatures of epithelial ovarian cancer: analysis of associations with tumor characteristics and epidemiologic risk factors.
Six gene expression subtypes of invasive epithelial ovarian cancer were recently defined using microarrays by Tothill and colleagues. The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) project subsequently replicated these subtypes and identified a signature predictive of survival in high-grade serous (HGS) cancers. We previously validated these signatures for use in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. The aim of the present study was to determine whether these signatures are associated with specific ovarian cancer risk factors, which would add to the evidence that they reflect the heterogeneous etiology of this disease. ⋯ This study suggests that molecular signatures may augment the ability to define etiologic subtypes of epithelial ovarian cancer.

Comparison of associations of body mass index, abdominal adiposity, and risk of colorectal cancer in a large prospective cohort study.
Increased body mass index (BMI) is an established colorectal cancer risk factor. High waist circumference or waist-hip-ratio (WHR) may better reflect an abnormal metabolic state and be more predictive of colorectal cancer risk than BMI. ⋯ These findings may improve our understanding of the relation of adiposity to colorectal cancer.

Randomized Controlled TrialReduced nicotine content cigarettes and nicotine patch.
Reduced nicotine content (RNC) cigarettes have led to smoking fewer cigarettes, withdrawal relief, and facilitation of cessation. The aim of this study is to examine the effects RNC cigarettes with and without nicotine patch and patch alone on smoking behavior, toxicant exposure, withdrawal discomfort, and as an exploratory analysis, on long-term abstinence. ⋯ These findings may have implications for smoking cessation treatment or a policy measure to reduce nicotine content in cigarettes.

Night shift work and levels of 6-sulfatoxymelatonin and cortisol in men.
Night shift work is associated with cancer among men, but the biologic mechanism is unclear. We investigated whether male night shift workers showed changes in levels of melatonin and cortisol, potential biomarkers of cancer risk. ⋯ Shift work could be an important risk factor for many types of cancer.

Randomized Controlled TrialComparison of nicotine and carcinogen exposure with water pipe and cigarette smoking.
Smoking tobacco preparations in a water pipe (hookah) is widespread in many places of the world and is perceived by many as relatively safe. We investigated biomarkers of toxicant exposure with water pipe compared with cigarette smoking. ⋯ Smoking tobacco in water pipes has gained popularity in the United States and around the world. Many believe that water pipe smoking is not addictive and less harmful than cigarette smoking. We provide data on toxicant exposure that will help guide regulation and public education regarding water pipe health risk.
