The Impact of Preexisting Mental Health Disorders on the Diagnosis, Treatment, and Survival among Lung Cancer Patients in the U.S. Military Health System.
Higher cancer-related mortality has been observed among people with mental health disorders than in the general population. Both delay in diagnosis and inadequate treatment due to health care access have been found to explain the higher mortality. The U.S. Military Health System (MHS), in which all beneficiaries have equal access to health care, provides an ideal system to study this disparity where there are no or minimal barriers to health care access. This study assessed preexisting mental health disorders and stage at diagnosis, receipt of cancer treatment, and overall survival among patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in the U.S. MHS. ⋯ This study contributes to the current understanding that health care access may not be sufficient to explain the poor survival among patients with NSCLC with preexisting mental health disorders. Association between Body Powder Use and Ovarian Cancer: The African American Cancer Epidemiology Study (AACES).
Epidemiologic studies indicate increased ovarian cancer risk among women who use genital powder, but this has not been thoroughly investigated in African American (AA) women, a group with a high prevalence of use. We evaluate the relationship between use of genital powder and nongenital powder in invasive epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). ⋯ The results support that body powder is a modifiable risk factor for EOC among AA women. Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyBody Mass Index and Survival in a Prospective Randomized Trial of Localized High-Risk Renal Cell Carcinoma.
The relationship between adiposity and renal cell carcinoma is poorly understood. Prior studies have suggested body mass index (BMI) may be associated with indolent disease. ⋯ This is the first study utilizing data from a prospective randomized trial reporting an association between obesity and improved overall survival for patients with clear cell renal cell carcinoma. Breast Cancer Risk Prediction Using Clinical Models and 77 Independent Risk-Associated SNPs for Women Aged Under 50 Years: Australian Breast Cancer Family Registry.
The extent to which clinical breast cancer risk prediction models can be improved by including information on known susceptibility SNPs is not known. ⋯ Our estimates of the increased performance of clinical risk prediction models from including genetic information could be used to inform targeted screening and prevention.

Comparative StudyHerpes Zoster and Risk of Cancer in the Elderly U.S. Population.
Herpes zoster (HZ) arises in older people due to age-related decline in immunity. We assessed whether HZ, as a marker of immune suppression, is associated with increased cancer risk. ⋯ Age-related immune decline does not play a major role in cancer development in older people, but it may be important for some lymphomas.
