To evaluate the literature to determine whether hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors are effective for the prevention of nephropathy. ⋯ Adequate evidence does not currently exist to support the widespread use of statins as alternatives to strategies known to prevent the progression of renal disease, but statins may be used to complement other therapies in patients with additional indications.

To review the clinical benefits of beta-blockers as secondary prevention following a myocardial infarction (MI) and to address the reasons that clinicians are reluctant to use beta-blockers in specific patient populations. ⋯ Overall, the cardiovascular benefits of beta-blockers as secondary prevention of MI significantly outweigh the risks associated with their use.
