Comparative Study Clinical Trial Controlled Clinical Trial
Antimicrobial liquid formulations: a blind taste comparison of three brands of penicillin VK and three brands of amoxicillin.
To rate the perception of taste, texture, smell and aftertaste of various brands of penicillin VK and amoxicillin. ⋯ Overall, all three amoxicillin oral, liquid suspensions that were studied scored significantly better than the three penicillin VK solutions.

Case Reports
Severe rhinorrhea and respiratory distress in a neonate exposed to fluphenazine hydrochloride prenatally.
To report a case of respiratory distress with severe rhinorrhea in a newborn exposed prenatally to fluphenazine hydrochloride. ⋯ Severe rhinorrhea, vomiting, and respiratory distress that occurred in this infant have not been reported previously following prenatal fluphenazine hydrochloride exposure. Awareness of this problem would be helpful to clinicians and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of rhinorrhea in newborns.

To review the pathophysiology, epidemiology, and therapy of patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ⋯ The mortality of ARDS continues to be 70%. Pharmacists can play an active role in the supportive therapy of patients with ARDS, which is currently the only way to impact mortality.

To evaluate the role of continuous infusion loop diuretics in selected patient populations, discuss the advantages and disadvantages associated with continuous infusion, and recommend monitoring parameters for the use of continuous infusion therapy. Current dosing guidelines for continuous infusion loop diuretics have not been established, but a summary of previously studied doses is provided. ⋯ The use of continuous infusion loop diuretics is a therapeutic alternative for patients requiring diuresis. This form of administration has provided more consistent urine flow, fewer alterations in fluid balances, fewer urinary losses of electrolytes as well as decreased dosage of the diuretic requirements. The disadvantages have not been fully elucidated because of the limited evaluation of this administration method. Few studies have used this method of administration; however, the few data available indicate that continuous infusion of loop diuretics is an efficacious alternative to conventional therapy.

Thrombocytopenia in intensive care patients: a comprehensive analysis of risk factors in 314 patients.
To define the incidence and severity of thrombocytopenia in a mixed medical-surgical population of critically ill patients and to examine factors that may be related to the development of thrombocytopenia. ⋯ Thrombocytopenia in the critically ill occurs frequently, rarely reaches severely depressed concentrations, and primarily represents a manifestation of disease processes initiated prior to admission. Hemodynamic instability and/or heparin exposure appear to be the strongest identifiable correlates with thrombocytopenia. Although these may cause infrequent isolated cases, other specific drug causes of thrombocytopenia are not responsible for the majority of cases of thrombocytopenia in the critically ill.
