Case Reports
[Herpetic meningoencephalitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis: magnetic resonance imaging sequence].
We report a case of herpetic encephalitis in a 2-year-old girl. Diagnosis was made at 1st by clinical symptoms and MRI and confirmed by lumbar puncture. Forty days later, new neurologic symptoms appeared and MRI diagnosed acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. MRI better demonstrates CNS abnormalities in herpetic encephalitis and may play a major role as a 1st step in early diagnosis, in particular for acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.

There is a recent renewed interest in vitamin D metabolism and pathophysiology, due to its recent description as a hormone with a positive impact on global health rather than a strictly bone hormone: vitamin D could be a protective factor against infection, autoimmunity, cardiovascular morbidity, and cancer. By contrast, vitamin D deficiency appears to be increasingly frequent worldwide. We propose a review of these new aspects of vitamin D metabolism, with a focus on vitamin D status in a local pediatric cohort. There is an urgent need for revisiting current guidelines on vitamin D supplementation and for closely monitoring serum vitamin D in children with chronic diseases, i.e., at greater risk of cardiovascular impairment, bone morbidity, infectious disease, and acute inflammation.

Screening for sickle cell disease, the most common of recessive autosomic hemoglobin disorders, allows detection of sickle cell disease SCD (homozygous sickle cell disease, compound heterozygote SC, and S β-thalassemia) in a target population. Our objective was to evaluate its effectiveness at the Nice University Hospital. ⋯ Screening for sickle cell disease appears effective in Nice. It seems necessary to continue focusing on the importance of screening among maternity healthcare actors.

The mythology of the Greeks and Romans is full of monsters of fiction: giants, cyclops, centaurs, hydras, Gorgons… The accounts of travelers, reproduced in the Natural History of Pline l'Ancien reported the existence, in distant countries, of men with a dog's head (baboons), of men with a single tall foot (sciapode), beings whose face is embedded in the chest (or acephala blemmyes), to which must be added a wide variety of men with no mouth, no nose, or equipped with giant ears or feet turned backwards, as well as hermaphrodites. Teratology reports on monstrous births, which have constituted the factual basis from which the imagination conceived adults whose morphology corresponds to the monsters of legend. Newborns sirenomelia were behind the legend of sciapode and sirens. ⋯ The acardiac fetus may explain some monstrous forms, features the work of Hieronymus Bosch. The significance of the monsters of legend, their genesis, their persistence through the ages is complex. By approaching teratology, we added a new field of exploration of real monsters of antiquity and Middle Ages.

The market value for energy drinks is continually growing and the annual worldwide energy drink consumption is increasing. However, issues related to energy drink ingredients and the potential for adverse health consequences remain to be elucidated. This aim of the present paper is to review the current knowledge on putative adverse effects of energy drinks, especially in youths. ⋯ Consumption of energy drinks with alcohol during heavy episodic drinking is at risk of serious injury, sexual assault, drunk driving, and death. However, even after adjusting for alcohol consumption, students who consume alcohol mixed with energy drinks had dramatically higher rates of serious alcohol-related consequences. It has been reported that the subjective perceptions of some symptoms of alcohol intoxication are less intense after the combined ingestion of the alcohol plus energy drink; however, these effects are not detected in objective measures of motor coordination and visual reaction time.
