[Comparison of methods for evaluating renal function (Data of Kaunas University of Medicine Hospital in 2006)].
Cockcroft-Gault formula and Modification of Diet in Renal Disease (MDRD) equation are widely used as indirect estimates of renal function. The precision and reliability of these formulas regarding kidney function are still discussed. The aim of our study was to evaluate glomerular filtration rate by different methods and compare the results. ⋯ CONCLUSIONS. Cockcroft-Gault and MDRD formulas are best for the evaluation of moderate degree of renal insufficiency, and in early stage of chronic kidney disease, underestimation of glomerular filtration rate is possible by using formulas. Estimates of glomerular filtration rate based on formulas are higher as compared to endogenous creatinine clearance measurements in end-stage chronic kidney disease.

Prevalence and causes of iron deficiency anemias in infants aged 9 to 12 months in Estonia.
To investigate the prevalence and causes of iron deficiency anemia in infants aged 9 to 12 months in Estonia. ⋯ Iron deficiency anemia is common among 9-12-month-old Estonian infants. The main risk factor for iron deficiency was birthweight less than 3000 g.

The peculiarities of Pseudomonas aeruginosa resistance to antibiotics and prevalence of serogroups.
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most common nonfermenting aerobic gram-negative microorganisms identified in clinical specimens of hospitalized patients. The emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains is a growing concern in hospital-acquired infections. Typing of strains is important for identifying the sources of infection as well as prevention of cross-infections and monitoring of the efficacy of antimicrobial therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance and prevalence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa serogroups isolated at Kaunas University of Medicine Hospital, Lithuania. ⋯ The results of our study show that serogroup O:E was the most prevalent serogroup of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in our hospital, and its resistance to antibiotics was the highest.

Short-term and one-year prognosis of diabetic patients with a first-ever myocardial infarction.
To clarify the importance of clinical features and changes in the first electrocardiogram in 28-day and 1-year mortality in patients with diabetes. ⋯ Acute heart failure and Q-wave in derivations of the first electrocardiogram reflecting anterior site of myocardial infarction increased the risk of death from ischemic heart disease during the first year, and female gender--during the first 28 days in diabetic patients with myocardial infarction.

[Relationship of arterial wall parameters to cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular risk assessed by SCORE system].
To investigate the relationship of arterial wall parameters (flow-mediated dilatation of the brachial artery, augmentation index, pulse wave velocity, stiffness index, carotid intima-media thickness) to conventional cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular risk assessed by SCORE system. ⋯ Arterial wall parameters are closely associated with conventional risk factors; they are influenced by age and the presence of diabetes. Arterial stiffness parameters are also influenced by mean arterial pressure; high-density lipoprotein cholesterol has influence on carotid intima-media thickness. Cutoff values for carotid intima-media thickness and carotid-radial pulse wave velocity could help to discriminate patients with increased cardiovascular risk.
