Randomized Controlled TrialEFFICACY OF CYCLOCRYOTHERAPY AND TRANSSCLERAL DIODE LASER CYCLOPHOTOCOAGULATION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF REFRACTORY GLAUCOMA.
Treating advanced glaucoma often requires numerous therapeutic modalities in order to achieve the desired intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the IOP lowering efficacy of both cyclocryotherapy (CCT) and transscleral diode laser cyclophotocoagulation (TS-DCPC) in the management of refractory primary open-angle glaucoma. This prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial included 40 patients (40 eyes) with refractory glaucoma treated at the Eye Department, Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia, between January 2016 and June 2019. ⋯ Follow-up measurements of IOP in group 2 showed the following results: 16.00 mm Hg (IQR, 10.00-17.00) (48% decrease from the baseline value), 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 10.00-16.00) (56% decrease from the baseline value), 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 12.25-16.50) (43% decrease from the baseline value) and 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 11.25-15.75) (53% decrease from the baseline value) after 7 days, 1, 6 and 12 months, respectively. The mean number of antiglaucoma drugs used decreased from 4 to 0.65±0.81 and 2.25±1.07 in groups 1 and 2, respectively. In conclusion, study results confirmed the CCT and TS-DCPC to have a rapid and statistically significant ocular hypotensive effect in eyes with refractory glaucoma at one-year follow-up.

Randomized Controlled TrialCOMBINED TREATMENT WITH BEVACIZUMAB AND TRIAMCINOLONE ACETONIDE FOR MACULAR EDEMA DUE TO RETINAL VEIN OCCLUSION.
The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of combined intravitreal bevacizumab and triamcinolone in the treatment of macular edema due to retinal vein occlusion. A prospective randomized trial was conducted in the Department of Ophthalmology, Osijek University Hospital Centre in Osijek including 51 patients divided into three groups depending on the drug received. The first group received 1.25 mg intravitreal bevacizumab, the second group received 1 mg intravitreal triamcinolone, and the third group received a combination of 1.25 mg bevacizumab and 1 mg intravitreal triamcinolone on the same day. ⋯ A positive trend regarding visual improvement was observed in the group receiving combined treatment in spite of the lowest initial visual acuity, highest value of macular thickness and longest mean duration of symptoms. In conclusion, combined treatment with bevacizumab and triamcinolone for the treatment of retinal vein occlusion is more potent, safe, efficient and cost-effective. It can also be recommended because fewer injections are needed in patients undergoing treatment for macular edema.

Randomized Controlled Trial Observational StudyEFFECT OF PREOPERATIVE RESPIRATORY REHABILITATION IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING CARDIAC SURGERY.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of preoperative respiratory rehabilitation on functional capacity, length of stay in intensive care unit (ICU), duration of mechanical ventilation (MV) and total hospitalization, as well as to estimate arterial blood gas (ABG) values in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Nineteen patients were included in the randomized observational study, divided into two groups: group A (intervention) and B (control). Preoperative and postoperative rehabilitation was performed in group A, and only postoperative rehabilitation in group B. ⋯ The length of hospital stay significantly correlated with preoperative rehabilitation in group A (r=0.885; p<0.0001). There was no difference in ABG parameters between the groups. The study showed that preoperative respiratory rehabilitation had an effect on reducing duration of MV and length of total hospitalization, and improved functional capacity.

Randomized Controlled TrialSTRESS ULCER PROPHYLAXIS AS A RISK FACTOR FOR TRACHEAL COLONIZATION AND HOSPITAL-ACQUIRED PNEUMONIA IN INTENSIVE CARE PATIENTS: IMPACT ON LATENCY TIME FOR PNEUMONIA.
Stress ulcer prophylaxis is associated with bacterial colonization of respiratory tract. The aims of our study were to determine risk factors for trachea colonization (TC), colonization of pharynx (CP) or stomach (CD) and hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP), and divide the factors into those with high risk and low risk. The study population (ventilated intensive care unit (ICU) patients eligible to receive stress ulcer prophylaxis) was randomized to receive one of three different treatment protocols: ranitidine, sucralfate, and no stress ulcer prophylaxis (control group). ⋯ The longest LAT was found in patients colonized with Acinetobacter spp. Risk factors that accelerated the occurrence of HAP were found to have caused previous colonization. A combination of risk factors increased the likelihood of TC and HAP, and shortened LAT between TC and HAP.

Case Reports Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of Pressure-Controlleda Volume-Controlled Ventilation on Hemodynamic and Respiratory Parameters in Patients During Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.
Many papers have been published investigating the effects of intraoperative mechanical ventilation on the incidence of intra- and postoperative respiratory complications. The potential advantages of protective pressure over volume-controlled ventilation mode during laparoscopic surgery have yet to be proven. This study included 60 patients aged between 18 and 70 with ASA score 1-3, body mass index (BMI) ≤35 kg/m2, and without prior history of chronic respiratory diseases, who were scheduled for laparoscopic cholecystectomy under general anesthesia. ⋯ Other measured parameters were of similar characteristics. It is concluded that PCV and volume-controlled ventilation were equally effective in maintaining adequate ventilation, oxygenation and hemodynamic stability in the groups of patients observed. However, comparison of obese patients revealed some advantages of PCV which, given the present pace of change, should be additionally investigated.
