[Physical restraint use in critical care units. Perceptions of patients and their families].
The use of physical restraints in Intensive Care Units (ICU) is common although little is known about patients' and relatives' perceptions of this use. ⋯ Most patients used physical restraints for a short period of time and only the wrist restraint was used. Patients using physical restraints and their relatives expressed a wide range of feelings and sensations, with no negative future repercussions. In general, they agreed with the use of restraints although more precise information would lead to greater acceptance.

Review[Nursing knowledge about hypothermia induced after cardiopulmonary arrest: literature review].
This paper aims to conduct a review of current scientific evidence on therapeutic hypothermia (TH) induced after cardiac arrest (CA).To examine the published literature; existing nursing knowledge; and the pursuit of the proper role of nursing. ⋯ This work shows clear evidence of the use of TH induced after CA, and the literature and knowledge required for nursing to interpret their own role, and to introduce standardised protocols for ICUs.

Pain is one of the main symptoms reported by patients who have had heart surgery. ⋯ Postoperative pain after heart surgery show significant individual variability. In our study, age, bypass grafting with internal mammary artery and preoperatory anxiety were shown as predictive variables of postoperative pain in patients undergoing heart surgery.

Review[Ultrasound guided radial artery cannulation: procedure description and literature review].
Arterial catheterization is the second most common invasive procedure performed in critical care units. These devices are essential in certain types of patients (the hemodinamically unstable or those who require regular evaluation of the gasometric values). ⋯ Ultrasound-guided catheter insertion has been used for years to guide central venous cannulation in critical care, but its use has been more limited for arterial catheterization. This paper aims to describe the technique of ultrasound-guided radial artery catheterization and reviews the most important research papers that have evaluated the safety and efficacy of this procedure in the adult population.

[Does noninvasive ventilation avoid intubation of the critical patient?].
In recent years we have witnessed an increased use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in our intensive care units (ICUs). Its use is intended mainly in cases of acute respiratory failure (ARF), in order to improve arterial oxygenation, increase alveolar ventilation, decrease work of breathing and avoid intubation. For this reason, we designed a study that has aimed to quantify the number of patients who have benefited from NIV during their admission, to know the type of NIV used in these patients and to determine whether the use of NIV has avoided tracheal intubation. ⋯ A total of 46% of patients treated with NIV required intubation, thus extending their stay in the ICU by ±6 days. Most patients treated with NIV had a history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and / or were carriers of VNI with continuous positive pressure (CPAP) at home. Following this analysis, we concluded that treatment with NIV did not prevent tracheal intubation in a considerable number of patients (37) diagnosed with ARF and the NIV was effective in patients with a history of COPD and / or CPAP at home.
