Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial[Nursing evaluation of the effect of the type of sedation on the degree of anxiety in patients undergoing cardiac surgery].
The objective of this work is to identify the degree of preoperatory anxiety which patients who must undergo cardiac surgery present, and evaluate the influence of sedation with Propofol or Midazolam in the appearance of anxiety in the immediate and late postoperatory. The study population was formed by 22 patients, being appointed at random to receive Propofol or Midazolam in infusions. ⋯ The patients who were sedated with propofol showed a level of postoperatory anxiety significatively lower than those patients who were treated with midazolam (p < 0.05). To conclude, we believe that the type of sedative used has a significant influence in the development of post-operatory anxiety.

This study of the safety of patients undergoing mechanical ventilation was undertaken to ensure correct ventilation and to find quality-control elements for patients and nursing staff. Differences in mode programming and ventilation parameters and their registry at the change of nursing shifts, and correct programming of the sensitivity and minimum minute volume alarms and maximum airway pressure alarms were examined. In a two-month period, 8 cross-sectional studies were made of G1 prevalence in each of three nursing shifts. ⋯ Two hundred forty-eight G1 and 250 G2 recordings were made. The G2 studies revealed a generalized reduction in errors for all parameters. We concluded that the corrective measures were effective so these indicators were included in the monitoring of risk areas in the unit quality control program.

[Informing the families of patients admitted to an intensive care unit].
The admission of a patient to the intensive care unit (ICU) disturbs the family's normal function. Family members are confronted by a new and difficult situation and react with worry and anxiety. They have different needs, particularly for information and assurance. ⋯ The conditions affecting human communication were analyzed, with emphasis on the situations typical of the hospital environment that negatively influence communication. A bibliographic review was made of useful strategies for improving communication with families. To conclude, recommendations are made for facilitating communication, improving the family's well-being, and easing their adjustment to the disease process.

Intensive care units have been considered stress generating areas. Knowing the causes why this happens will allow us to take specific measures to prevent or minimize it. This study has been performed with the aim to identify stress raising factors, as they are perceived by intensive care patients. ⋯ The level of stress perceived by patients was low. The factors considered as most stressing were those related to physical aspects; presence of tubes in nose and mouth, impossibility to sleep and presence of noise, whereas those less stressing referred to Nursing attention. We conclude that patients perceive ICU as a little stressing place in spite of the excessive noise, remark the presence of invasive tubes and the difficulty to sleep as the most stressing factors, and in the same way, express a high degree of satisfaction about the attention received.
