ReviewChloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine in COVID-19: Practice Implications for Healthcare Professionals.
Chloroquine (CQ) and its derivatives such as hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) remain mainstay of therapy for malaria. These drugs are also approved for certain autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus. The antiviral activities of these drugs and their mechanisms have been studied in vitro previously against various viruses including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV). ⋯ The authors used the keywords to find the relevant studies, like COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2, pandemic, complications, repositioning, toxicity, overdose, treatment plan, implication strategies, prevention, chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, clinical trials, drug interactions, and practices advice, etc., in Pubmed and Google Scholar. This review aims to provide a detailed insight of practice implications related to these drugs, which would aid healthcare professionals to ensure the safe use of these drugs during the management of patients with COVID-19 disease. ReviewPreparing for a Pandemic: Our Plans and Lessons Learnt as a Department in a Tertiary Care Hospital.
This is a descriptive article aiming to present and analyse the steps of preparedness and troubleshooting of problems faced at operating rooms and intensive care unit during the ongoing coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, a tertiary care hospital in Ireland from February 2020 to March 2020. Concerning preparation, we reviewed all aspects of our clinical and potential logistic issues and their accessible solutions in times of limited resources. ⋯ We found good communication and training as critical factors in the preparation for a pandemic. Surgical Management of Penetrating Duodenal Injury: Role of Primary Repair.
To evaluate the outcome of primary repair in penetrating duodenal injuries. ⋯ Associated intra-abdominal organ and vascular injuries were predictive factors of overall mortality in duodenal injuries. Duodenum-related mortality was low, for this reason minimally invasive procedures such as primary repair will be more accurate in surgical management of penetrating duodenal injuries. Observational StudyPulmonary Functions and Factors Affecting Them in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.
To determine the pulmonary functions in patients with chronic kidney diseases (CKD) and factors affecting them. ⋯ Pulmonary functions were abnormal in almost half of the patients and restrictive lung disease was the most common pattern in these patients. Factors affecting the pulmonary functions were progression of CKD, falling hemoglobin level, monthly income and education. Drop in GFR and anemia had negative correlation and age had positive correlation with pulmonary functions. Key Words: CKD, Pulmonary functions, Restrictive lung disease, GFR, Anemia.
