Dermatological disorders related to cultural practices in black Africans of Sierra Leone.
To describe various skin manifestations directly or indirectly related to the prevalent cultural practices in the local community of black Africans of Sierra Leone. ⋯ Prevalent cultural practices in black Africans do play a role in causation of various skin disorders. For a dermatologist, it becomes imperative to be cognizant of the signs and symptoms associated with these practices for proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Comparative StudyComparison of diagnostic accuracy of non-invasive tests for Helicobacter pylori infection in children.
To compare urea breath and stool antigen in children, with histological diagnosis for Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection. ⋯ Both the noninvasive tests were found to be sensitive and specific as compared with histological identification, for the diagnosis of H. pylori in our pediatric population. The accuracy of urea breath test was better than the stool antigen test but later was easier to perform and could fulfill the criteria for a rapid bedside diagnostic test.

Regional and ethnic distribution of beta thalassemia mutations and effect of consanguinity in patients referred for prenatal diagnosis.
To determine the regional and ethnic distribution of beta thalassemia mutation and the effect of consanguinity in patients referred for prenatal diagnosis of beta b-thalassemia and to target the high risk population for screening. ⋯ In this series, the highest frequency was found in Punjabi Rajputs. The commonest mutation was Fr 8-9. Most parents were first cousins. Premarital thalassemia carrier testing can effectively reduce the disease.

To analyze various clinical presentations and the surgical management of ovarian pathologies in pre-menarche girls. ⋯ Ovarian tumors are rare in paediatric age group especially in pre-menarche girls. Except one, all malignant tumors were found in patients above 7 years of age. Benign (tumorous and non-tumorous) and malignant lesions occurred with equal frequency in pre-menarche girls in this study.

Outcome of mechanical mode of induction in failed primary labor induction.
To determine the role of an alternate (mechanical) inducing agent in failed labor induction. ⋯ When an alternate mechanical method was used, 75% of women labeled as "failed induction" delivered vaginally.
