Meta AnalysisPeripheral Nerve Block Combined with Low-Dose General Anaesthesia in Elderly Patients Receiving Hip Arthroplasty.
The study assessed the effectiveness and safety of nerve block combined with low-dose general anaesthesia in elderly hip arthroplasty patients, conducted by a meta-analysis of RCTs. Six trials involving 403 patients were identified from databases such as Cochrane, MEDLINE, and PubMed. The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference in pain scores at postoperative 12hours (95% CI, -2.39 to -0.35, p = 0.008) and 24hours (95% CI, -1.86 to -0.50, p = 0.0007). ⋯ However, between the two groups, there was no statistically significant difference in the 48hour pain score (95% CI, -2.58 to 0.62, p = 0.23). Essentially, this approach effectively reduces early post-surgical pain and it minimises anaesthetic use, whilst simultaneously lowering the risk of complications. Key Words: Nerve block, Elderly patients, Hip arthroplasty, Pain, Postoperative complication.

Meta AnalysisThymosin Alpha 1 Plus Routine Treatment for the Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
This systematic review was conducted to assess the curative effect of Thymosin alpha 1 in the acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) patients. Six electronic databases including EMBASE, PubMed, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Database, Chinese Biomedical Database, and Wanfang Database were searched for eligible papers focusing on the thymosin alpha 1 treatment in AECOPD patients. The effectiveness outcomes included T cell subset, pulmonary function, arterial blood gases, and the length of hospital stay. ⋯ Thymosin alpha 1 could significantly boost the immune function, and improve pulmonary function and arterial blood gas of AECOPD patients than routine treatment only. More high-quality randomised controlled trials are needed to further confirm Thymosin alpha 1 efficacy. Key Words: Thymosin alpha 1, Efficacy, Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Meta-analysis.

Meta AnalysisAssociation Between Neuropsychiatric Event and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Clinical Manifestation: A Meta-Analysis.
To uncover the clinical characteristics and investigate the underlying causes of psychiatric manifestations in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), including its subset, neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE). Through comprehensive database searches in PubMed, Embase, Medline, and Cochrane, from their inception to August 2023, the study focused on adult SLE and NPSLE cases. From the selected studies, data were synthesised via a random-effects meta-analysis, encompassing a total of 2,997 subjects across six studies. ⋯ The analysis suggests that the causality behind these manifestations is multifactorial, encompassing mental state, autoantibody profiles, and environmental factors, thus providing valuable insights into the clinical management and understanding of SLE and NPSLE. This study emphasises the complexity of SLE, particularly in its neuropsychiatric manifestations, and underscores the importance of targeted treatment strategies. Key Words: Systemic lupus erythematosus, Neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus, Neuropsychiatric event, Meta-analysis.

Meta AnalysisRisk Factors for Cytomegalovirus Infection after Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: A Meta-Analysis.
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common viral infection after haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, studies on related risk factors give different views without any clear conclusion. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk variables of CMV infection after HSCT in order to provide recommendations for therapeutic treatment. ⋯ However, the mechanisms behind the risk variables are unclear. Further research is necessary to understand the risk factors and to enhance the care of patients with these risk factors to prevent or control infection. Key Words: Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, Cytomegalovirus infection, Risk factors, Meta-analysis.

Meta AnalysisExploring the Synergistic Effects of Concurrent Exercise for Managing Type-II Diabetes Mellitus: A Meta-Analysis.
The effectiveness of concurrent exercise (CE) as an emerging approach for type-II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients was evaluated through a comprehensive search on Google Scholar, PubMed, Pedro, CINAHL, and Medline from 2015 to March 2023. Sixteen RCTs were selected which evaluated CE (aerobic + resistance in the same session) effects on a minimum of three days/week among T2DM patients, and the control group received usual care or no exercise. Studies that evaluated at least one glycaemic variable, i.e. ⋯ However, the relatively high I² values suggest notable variability among studies, and further research to explore the factors contributing to this heterogeneity, exercise protocol along with progression, and duration of diabetes are needed, which is more challenging to determine a precise dose-response relationship. Therefore, more studies are required to provide thorough insights into these components for T2DM management. Key Words: Glycated haemoglobin, Glycaemic control, Insulin resistance, Physical exercise, Type-II diabetes mellitus.
