ReviewPharmacogenomics in dermatology: tools for understanding gene-drug associations.
Pharmacogenomics aims to associate human genetic variability with differences in drug phenotypes in order to tailor drug treatment to individual patients. The massive amount of genetic data generated from large cohorts of patients with variable drug phenotypes have led to advances in this field. ⋯ The implementation of clinical pharmacogenomics within health care systems remains an area of ongoing development. This review provides an introduction to the field of pharmacogenomics and to current pharmacogenomics resources using examples of gene-drug associations relevant to the field of dermatology.

Plaque psoriasis is increasingly recognized as a multisystemic disease whose most common comorbidities include psoriatic arthritis, cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, overweight/obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, and depression. The presence of such comorbidities affects the therapeutic choices for clinicians. Patients often visit dermatologists more frequently than they do other clinicians, so it is incumbent upon dermatologists to recognize and address early signs of psoriatic comorbidities to prevent further deterioration and improve their patients' quality of life. ReviewTopical management and wound care approaches for hidradenitis suppurativa.
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the follicular unit in apocrine glandbearing skin, resulting in deep-seated nodules, sinus tracts, abscesses, and ultimately scarring. HS is a highly distressing condition, and has one of the highest impacts on quality of life compared to other dermatologic diseases. ⋯ However, limited evidence exists regarding the optimal regimen for topical therapy and wound care. On the basis of existing literature, we provide a comprehensive review of topical management and wound care.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurrent painful nodules and abscesses involving intertriginous areas. Repeated episodes of profound inflammation in HS can lead to a number of complications, causing significant morbidity and decreasing quality of life. Complications of HS may affect the skin alone or may have systemic impact. ⋯ Systemic complications of HS include chronic pain, systemic amyloidosis, and possibly anemia. Preventing disease complications by controlling primary disease is a key component of HS management. Clinicians should be prepared to recognize complications early, as prompt management is necessary to minimize negative impacts.

Developing academic work and evidence to guide the practice of inpatient dermatology.
Hospitalist dermatology is a subspecialty dedicated to high-quality care of medically complex hospitalized patients with dermatologic diseases. Significant unanswered questions affecting the diagnosis and management of these patients persist, and research is urgently needed to improve patient care and move the field forward. This article explores strategies for successful conduct of research in hospital dermatology, including the role of cross-collaboration, and draws parallels with strategies utilized in rare diseases research.
