Age, height, BMI and FBG predict prostate volume in ageing benign prostatic hyperplasia: Evidence from 5285 patients.
Several studies have reported a potential association between prostate volume (PV) and prostate disease. Here, we classified the risk factors for PV among benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) patients. ⋯ Age, height and BMI were positive independent risk factors of enlarged PV in BPH patients, and FBG had a protective role.

Comparing the effect of electroacupuncture treatment on obese and non-obese women with stress urinary incontinence or stress-predominant mixed urinary incontinence: A secondary analysis of two randomised controlled trials.
To explore whether obesity patients with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥25 kg/m2 who suffer from stress urinary incontinence (SUI) or stress-predominant mixed urinary incontinence (S-MUI) show less improvement in urinary incontinence (UI) symptoms after electroacupuncture (EA) treatment compared with non-obese counterparts. ⋯ This study suggests that EA treatment may safely improve UI symptoms in both obese and non-obese patients, regardless of BMI category. Additionally, obesity status may not affect the efficacy of EA treatment on SUI or S-MUI among Chinese women.

ReviewTraditional medicines for asthma in children and adults: A systematic review of placebo-controlled studies.
Traditional medicines (TMs) adjunctive to conventional medications are widely used for asthma in east-Asia and have gained popularity in western countries. ⋯ The application of certain traditional herbal medicines used in east-Asia as adjuncts to conventional medications improved outcomes in acute and chronic asthma, but most evidence was based on single trials. Therefore, no single TM could be recommended. Effect sizes varied according to asthma severity at baseline. Future studies should consider baseline severity when enrolling participants.

The influence of gene polymorphisms on postprandial triglyceride response after oral fat tolerance test meal in patients with diabetes mellitus.
We evaluated the influence of CETP (rs5882 and rs708272), APOE (rs7412, rs429358) and LPL (rs328) gene polymorphisms on triglyceride (TG) response to oral fat tolerance test (OFTT) meal in patients with well-controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). ⋯ In patients with well-controlled T2DM, LPL but not CETP and APOE gene polymorphisms influenced TG postprandial response. Particularly, S447 allele carriers of LPL gene presented more frequently positive postprandial TG response to OFTT compared with 447X allele carriers. No differences were found between allele carriers of patients with negative response to OFTT in any other studied gene polymorphism.

Community-onset Pseudomonas aeruginosa urinary sepsis in elderly people: Predictive factors, adequacy of empirical therapy and outcomes.
Purpose To know the predictive factors for Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) urinary sepsis in hospitalised elderly patients coming from community, the adequacy of empirical antibiotic therapy and its outcomes. Methods Retrospective case-control study conducted between 2007 and 2017. Patients aged 65 years or older with PA urinary sepsis were included as cases. ⋯ Inadequate empirical antimicrobial therapy (IEAT) and length of hospital stay were higher in PA group (42% vs 24%, P = .002; 7.45 ± 4.36 days vs 6.43 ± 3.82 days, P = .045, respectively), but mortality was not different (7.2% vs 8.8%, P = .648). Conclusions Pseudomonas aeruginosa urinary sepsis in elderly people was associated with male sex, urinary catheter and healthcare-associated infection. These infections had a higher rate of IEAT and a longer hospital stay than urinary sepsis caused by other microorganisms.
