To evaluate the correlation of postmastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT) with local relapse rate, disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) in a group of breast cancer (BC) patients at intermediate risk for locoregional relapse (stage I-II with either 1-3 positive axillary nodes, or node-negative grade III BC) treated with radical mastectomy. ⋯ Our results did not show that PMRT significantly influences the incidence of disease relapse, DFS and OS in stage I-II BC patients with intermediate risk for disease relapse. However, it seems that PMRT might influence the occurrence of locoregional recurrence in these patients.

Preoperative pulmonary evaluation is essential in order to identify patients at risk for postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs). Procedure and patient related risk factors should be assessed and modified if possible in order to reduce the incidence of PPCs. ⋯ Lung cancer resection surgery also requires extended preoperative evaluation, which is guided by functional pulmonary testing, including spirometry, diffusing capacity of the lung to carbon monoxide (DLCO) measurement, split function testing, exercise testing and arterial blood gas analysis according to published guidelines. Strategies to reduce the risk of PPCs should always be applied in patients at risk, beginning preoperatively and continuing during intraoperative and postoperative period.

The influence of dexamethasone in the decrease of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.
The aim of this study was to determine the influence of dexamethasone in the decrease of cisplatin and etoposide-induced nausea and vomiting in patients treated for lung cancer during and after 2 chemotherapy cycles. ⋯ Dexamethasone administered with 5-HT(3) antagonists and dopamine receptor antagonists significantly decreases the chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting.

Concomitant administration of uracil-tegafur and leucovorin during adjuvant radiotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer.
We report the feasibility and toxicity profile, and the impact on local control, disease-free survival and overall survival rates of our study which consisted of postoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy using uracil-tegafur (UFT)/leukovorin (LV) in locally advanced rectal cancer patients. ⋯ The acute toxicity profile of UFT/LV, local control, disease-free survival and overall survival in the concurrent chemoradiotherapy setting for operated, locally advanced rectal cancer seem comparable with the standard 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-based therapies.

Preoperative radiotherapy (RT) at high-dose short-course or at conventional fractions for rectal cancer has proven effect in increasing the tumor control. The aim of this study was to test the impact of 2 different preoperative RT schemes on local recurrence, distant metastasis and survival rates and to defi ne the indications for each of them. ⋯ The conventional preoperative RT with 50 Gy proved more effective for advanced rectal cancer (T4 or N2) and for sphincter-saving resections for lower-lying tumors. The short scheme 5 x 5 Gy is appropriate for less advanced tumors (T2-3, N0-1), therefore requiring accurate clinical staging.
