Comparative StudyShort-term comparison of postural effects of three minimally invasive hip approaches in primary total hip arthroplasty: Direct anterior, posterolateral and Röttinger.
There is renewed interest in total hip arthroplasty (THA) with the development of minimally invasive approaches. The anterior and Röttinger approaches are attractive for their anatomical and minimally invasive character, but with no comparative studies in the literature definitely suggesting superiority in terms of quality of functional recovery. We therefore performed a case-control study, assessing: 1) whether the postural parameters of patients operated on with the anterior, Röttinger and posterior minimally invasive approaches were similar to those of asymptomatic subjects, and 2) whether there were any differences in postural parameters between the three approaches at short-term follow-up. ⋯ III, case-control study.

Review Case ReportsHolocord spinal epidural abscess: Case report and literature review.
Holocord spinal epidural abscess (SEA) is a rare condition. To our knowledge, five cases of SEA have been reported so far, and no consensus has been made on the treatment yet. In this article, we report a case of holocord SEA and review literature to further understanding of SEA. ⋯ The patient remained neurologically stable and continued to be clinically in good condition without any low back pain after 1 year. Surgical drainage, together with systemic antibiotics, is the main treatment choice for extensive SEAs. Although treatment should be considered that highlights the importance of examining the factors related to the health and condition of the patients and the anatomy and extent of the abscess, early surgical treatment associated with prolonged antibiotic treatment is necessary.

Comparative StudyUnstable intertrochanteric versus displaced femoral neck fractures treated with cementless bipolar hemiarthroplasty in elderly patients; a comparison of 80 matched patients.
While hemiarthroplasty (HA) is considered the treatment of choice for displaced femoral neck (FN) fractures in elderly patients, HA has been partly performed as an alternative treatment option for unstable intertrochanteric (IT) fractures. However, there is a paucity of data regarding the risk and availability of HA for unstable IT fractures compared to HA for displaced FN fractures in elderly patients. Therefore, we performed this case-control study to determine whether HA for unstable IT fractures provides clinical results and survival comparable to HA for displaced FN fractures in elderly patients. ⋯ Level III, case-control study.

Radiologic adjacent segment degeneration 2 years after lumbar fusion for degenerative spondylolisthesis.
Lumbar fusion is now a currently accepted treatment for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLSP), but may induce adjacent segment degeneration (ASD). The present study hypothesis was that there are radiological parameters associated with ASD. The study objective was to determine predictive factors of ASD. ⋯ IV, retrospective cohort.

Third degree open fractures and traumatic sub-/total amputations of the upper extremity: Outcome and relevance of the Mangled Extremity Severity Score.
Third degree open fractures and traumatic sub-/total amputations of the upper extremity represent severe injuries and are associated with a high rate of functional impairment of the affected extremity. More than 20 years ago, the Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) was introduced to predict amputation following severe lower extremity trauma. However, there have been few studies evaluating MESS in connection with the mangled upper limb. ⋯ IV: retrospective or historical series.
