Cryotherapy with dynamic intermittent compression for analgesia after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Preliminary study.
Cryotherapy is a useful adjunctive analgesic measure in patients with postoperative pain following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery. Either static permanent compression or dynamic intermittent compression can be added to increase the analgesic effect of cryotherapy. Our objective was to compare the efficacy of these two compression modalities combined with cryotherapy in relieving postoperative pain and restoring range of knee motion after ligament reconstruction surgery. ⋯ Level III, case-control study.

Case ReportsAtlanto-axial dislocation complicating a type II odontoid fracture. Reduction and final fixation.
A case of traumatic posterolateral C1-C2 dislocation associated with odontoid fracture is reported. This is a rare case of traumatic posterolateral C1-C2 dislocation associated with odontoid fracture. Its management is discussed. ⋯ The patient wore a cervical collar and underwent physiotherapy during three months. To our best knowledge, this case represents the first traumatic atlanto-axial dislocation associated with an odontoid fracture which was treated through retropaharyngeal approach. This had been rendered possible thanks to the final reduction maneuver in extension.

Percutaneous quadriceps tendon pie-crusting release of extension contracture of the knee.
To release extension contracture of the knee, the authors used a minimally invasive technique: percutaneous quadriceps tendon pie-crusting release. Percutaneous pie-crusting release was performed using an 18-gauge needle to puncture the stiff fibrous band of the distal and lateral quadriceps tendon under maximum knee flexion. Quadriceps contracture was gradually released by multiple needle punctures. ⋯ At a mean follow-up of eight months, mean maximum flexion was 103°. There were no major complications. The technique of quadriceps tendon pie-crusting release is a simple, minimally invasive and effective treatment for knee extension contracture.

Postoperative pain control by intra-articular local anesthesia versus femoral nerve block following total knee arthroplasty: impact on discharge.
The goal of this retrospective study was to compare pain control following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) on a perioperative protocol of local anesthesia (LA) versus the more classical femoral nerve block (FNB) technique. ⋯ Level III - Case control study.

Does measuring the range of motion of the hip and knee add to the assessment of disability in people undergoing joint replacement?
Range of motion (ROM) is a core component of some commonly used measures of disability, such as the American Knee Society Score and Harris Hip Score. However, the relationship between ROM and function is contested. The aim of this cross-sectional analysis was to investigate the relationship between pre-operative range of motion (ROM) and disability in patients undergoing hip and knee joint replacement. ⋯ III - cohort study.
