Vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) are typically treated nonoperatively but can be treated with either kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty when indicated. The decision to treat patients with/without surgical intervention is dependent on the severity of deformity and patient risk profile. The aims of this study were to: 1) compare baseline patient demographics, 2) identify risk factors of patients undergoing operative vs. nonoperative management, and 3) identify patient-specific risk factors associated with postoperative readmissions. ⋯ This study highlights specific comorbidities that are significantly associated with higher rates of kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty for the treatment of thoracolumbar wedge compression fractures and increased risk for 90-day postoperative hospital readmission.

Management of patients with optic nerve sheath meningiomas (ONSMs) is controversial and the treatment strategy in this patient group is still up for discussion. Transnasal endoscopic orbital and optic nerve decompression aims to reduce the pressure in the orbit and on the optic nerve and thereby prevent vision loss. This article presents material from 7 cases of transnasal endoscopic orbital decompression. ⋯ The current report of 7 patients with ONSM shows promising results for this surgical procedure as 4 out of 7 patients experienced improvement in their vision at follow-up examinations. The 2 patients who experienced deterioration of vision already had severely reduced vision preoperatively, which indicates that surgery should be considered before the vision becomes significantly reduced.

Machine learning and deep learning techniques offer a promising multidisciplinary solution for subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) detection. The novel transfer learning approach mitigates the time constraints associated with the traditional techniques and demonstrates a superior performance. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and CNN-based transfer learning models in differentiating between aneurysmal SAH and nonaneurysmal SAH. ⋯ CNN-based transfer learning models can accurately diagnose the etiology of SAH from computed tomography images and is a valuable tool for clinicians. This approach could reduce the need for invasive procedures such as digital subtraction angiography, leading to more efficient medical resource utilization and improved patient outcomes.

Percutaneous transforaminal endoscopic discectomy (PTED) has steep learning curves and a high incidence of complications, but currently, efficient and economical training methods are lacking. This study aimed to validate a novel simulator for PTED. ⋯ This study demonstrates the validity of the novel simulator, revealing significant associations between PTED experience and performance metrics in a simulated PEWC setting. Furthermore, the PEWC module also offers a good realistic design and high education value according to experts.

To compare the differences in postoperative complications and prognosis between patients treated with neuroendoscopy versus conventional craniotomy surgery for hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH). ⋯ Neuroendoscopy combined with Intracranial pressure monitoring is a safe and reliable approach for the treatment of HICH that reduces the incidence of postoperative cerebral infarction and improves the recovery of neurological function after surgery.
