Extracranial carotid artery aneurysms (ECAAs) are extraordinarily rare, representing approximately 0.4%-4% of all extracranial artery aneurysms. As medical technology has advanced, new approaches for ECAAs treatment can be performed. Nevertheless, there is currently no consensus on the best therapeutic approach due to the information scarcity. ⋯ ECAAs are a rare clinical condition. However, a great percentage of patients could present with ischemic symptoms. Similarly, cardiovascular risk factors present as the most prevalent comorbid conditions associated with these vascular aberrancies. With this systematic review, we seek to provide insight into extracranial carotid aneurysms, identifying areas of opportunity in both the diagnosis and management of this pathology and the standardization of clinical reporting and case classification. These findings underscore the need for future research to improve the understanding and approach to this complex clinical condition.

The authors present a comprehensive review on the history and development of oncolytic herpes simplex viral therapies for malignant glioma with a focus on mechanisms of delivery in prior and ongoing clinical trials. This review highlights the advancements made with regard to delivering these therapies to a highly complex immunologic environment in the setting of the blood brain and blood tumor barrier in a safe and effective manner.

This paper reviews the historical progression of ventriculoperitoneal shunt valve designs with the goal of providing an understanding of their functionality and failure mechanisms. While shunting is the predominant treatment for hydrocephalus, the statistics of overall shunt failure remain high, and valve failure is responsible for a significant percentage of revision surgeries. ⋯ Information is provided on the importance of valves in hydrocephalus treatment with discussion on each class of valves and their advantages and shortcomings. Substantial development over decades has significantly improved valve functionality, and ongoing research continues to provide more robust valves and shunt systems for hydrocephalus management.

Spinal arachnoiditis (SA) involves chronic inflammation of the spinal arachnoid membrane, often due to surgery, trauma, infections, or autoimmune issues. It leads to ongoing pain and sensory disturbances in the back and lower limbs, along with possible bladder and bowel issues. Treatments focus on symptom relief and improving life quality. Despite growing research interest, a comprehensive analysis of SA's research trends is missing. This study uses bibliometric analysis to explore SA research trends, offering guidance for future research directions. ⋯ This study provides the first extensive bibliometric overview of spinal arachnoiditis (SA) research, examining trends, hotspots, and future paths. It covers seven key areas: from fundamental and pathogenesis research to personalized medicine and public education, reflecting a shift towards clinical applications and social strategies. The goal is to enhance understanding and treatment of SA.

While studies have examined the relationship between sex and outcomes after lumbar fusion surgery, few have strictly controlled for other patient-level variables. In this study, we use coarsened exact matching to determine the effect of patient-reported sex on spinal fusion outcomes. ⋯ Female patients encountered longer hospital stays and higher odds of non-home discharge after single-level lumbar fusion compared to otherwise exactly matched male patients.
