Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyInterventions to reduce pain during vaccination in infancy.
To investigate interventions that affect pain reduction during vaccination in infants and children attending a well-child unit. ⋯ Here we expand on previous findings by demonstrating that breast-feeding may have an analgesic effect up to age 6 months and that in older children, both sucrose and lidocaine-prilocaine reduce vaccination pain.

Health-related quality of life in children with neurofibromatosis type 1: contribution of demographic factors, disease-related factors, and behavior.
To investigate health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) with parental reports and children's self-reports, and to investigate the potential contribution of demographic factors, disease-specific factors, and problems in school performance or behavior. ⋯ Parents, but not the children with NF1, report a profound impact of NF1 on physical, social, behavioral, and emotional aspects of HR-QOL. Multiple HR-QOL domains were most sensitive to behavioral problems, which points to an exciting potential opportunity to improve HR-QOL in children with NF1 by addressing these behavioral problems.

Obesity identified by discharge ICD-9 codes underestimates the true prevalence of obesity in hospitalized children.
To define inpatient care of obese children with or without an obesity diagnosis. ⋯ Inpatient obesity diagnoses underestimate inpatient utilization and misidentify patterns of care for obese children. Extreme caution is warranted when using obesity diagnoses to study healthcare utilization by obese children.

Variations in mortality and morbidity by gestational age among infants born at term.
To examine the risks of infant death and neonatal morbidity by week of gestation at term. ⋯ Term infants show considerable heterogeneity across gestational age in neonatal and late infant outcomes, even when born to mothers at low risk. Recent trends toward earlier labor induction may have adverse health impacts.

Risk factors for extreme events in infants hospitalized for apparent life-threatening events.
To determine whether known risk factors for cardiorespiratory illnesses will help identify infants who could experience extreme events during an admission for an apparent life-threatening event (ALTE) or later at home. ⋯ Extreme events were identified mostly in association with symptoms of URTIs, in infants born prematurely, and in infants <43 weeks post-conceptional age. Monitoring with a pulse oximeter should identify infants who sustain these events.
