Observational StudyLow Cerebral Oxygenation in Preterm Infants Is Associated with Adverse Neurodevelopmental Outcome.
To assess whether high and low levels of cerebral oxygenation (regional cerebral oxygenation [rScO2]) in infants born at <32 weeks of gestation were associated with adverse long-term outcome. ⋯ Low, but not high, rScO2 was associated with an unfavorable cognitive outcome. This suggests the use of a threshold of rScO2 <55% for future clinical studies when using adult near-infrared sensors (rScO2 <65% for neonatal sensors, approximately).

Nonconvulsive Seizure Detection by Reduced-Lead Electroencephalography in Children with Altered Mental Status in the Emergency Department.
To evaluate the proportion of children presenting to the emergency department (ED) with altered mental status who demonstrate nonconvulsive seizures on reduced-lead electroencephalography (EEG), and to further investigate the characteristics, treatment, and outcomes in these patients compared with patients without nonconvulsive seizures. ⋯ A relatively high percentage of pediatric patients with altered mental status in the ED experience nonconvulsive seizures. The use of reduced-lead EEG monitoring in the ED might facilitate the recognition and treatment of nonconvulsive seizures, especially among patients with a history of seizures.

Comparative StudyA Comparison of Developmental Outcomes of Adolescent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Survivors Born with a Congenital Heart Defect or Born Preterm.
To compare cognitive, motor, behavioral, and functional outcomes of adolescents born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) and adolescents born preterm. ⋯ Adolescents born with a CHD or born preterm have similar profiles of developmental deficits. These findings highlight the importance of providing long-term surveillance to both populations and guide the provision of appropriate educational and rehabilitation services to better ameliorate long-term developmental difficulties.
