Comparative Study
[Motivational factors in psychotherapy of eating disorders].
We examined changes in general psychopathology during psychotherapy of patients with eating disorders. We were also interested in distinguishing motivational characteristics of completers and dropouts with anorexia and bulimia nervosa. ⋯ The efficacy of cognitive-behavioural-social psychotherapy of patients with eating disorders seems to be confirmed by large decrease of general psychopathology. Dropouts with anorexia seem to have poorer insight concerned with lower need of health activity.

The presence of chronic disease is a risk factor for the development of mood disturbances and panic disorders. They can influence the course of disease and effectiveness of therapy. Depression may be the cause of making light doctor's advice. Anxious patients often aggravate symptoms of the disease. ⋯ Patients suffering from atopic/eczema dermatitis syndrome are pre-disposed to anxiety and depression manifestation. Even adequately controlled symptoms of atopic/eczema dermatitis syndrome may be the cause of those disturbances' occurrence.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment of severe depression but its mechanism of action is still unknown. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of first ECT on serum hormone concentrations in patients with severe depression. ⋯ (1) Single electroconvulsive shock insignificantly changes the pituitary-thyroid-adrenal-gonadal axis function. (2) Complicated hormonal changes found before electroconvulsive shock in patients with severe depression suggest the influence of psychotropic treatment as well as the illness on the endocrine system.

The goal of the research was to verify the comorbidity of difficult asthma and psychiatric disorders, their severity, the appearance of catastrophic interpretation of body sensations, and analysis of family functioning of asthmatic patients. ⋯ The research revealed that 74% of them suffered from panic disorder and 29% from depression. Family functioning of patients with difficult asthma was rather positive. In 71% of the group the specific trauma of suffering and/or death was discovered. Perhaps this trauma is etiologically connected with panic disorder, and also has an impact on the course of asthma.

Review
[The effectiveness of antidepressants in the treatment of chronic non-cancer pain--a review].
Antidepressants are often applied in the treatment of chronic pain. Analgesic action of tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) has been extensively studied and proven. TCAs are associated with a number of adverse effects which are inconvenient for patients. ⋯ Venlafaxine--selective serotonin and noradrenergic reuptake inhibitors (SNRI) was shown to be effective in the treatment of different kinds of pain. Duloxetine (SNRI) is effective in relieving both the emotional and painful physical symptoms of depression. Additional randomized, controlled trials are necessary to fully evaluate the role of new antidepressants in the treatment of chronic pain.
