Offspring of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are far more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the insulin metabolism of pregnant women with GDM in late pregnancy on the insulin metabolism of the fetuses and their correlation. ⋯ The HOMA-IR was significantly higher in the late pregnancy GDM women and their fetuses than in the control group. In addition, fetal HOMA-IR positively correlated to maternal HOMA-IR in late pregnancy GDM women.

A high percentage of the critically ill polytrauma patients develop acute kidney injury (AKI) secondary to trauma and are therefore prone to high morbidity and mortality rates. One of the main objectives in these cases is the fast detection of the condition and continuous rigorous monitoring of the patients. Currently the panel of biomarkers available for monitoring and for the prognosis of AKI is limited. Numerous studies have proven the importance of microRNAs in this field. In this actualization paper we wish to summarize the most relevant microRNAs that can be used as biomarkers for patients with AKI. ⋯ The expression of microRNAs can be successfully used in the future as a non-invasive method for the evaluation and monitoring of AKI patients.

It is well-established that vitamin D status is closely associated with the susceptibility to infections. We aimed to study the association between vitamin D status and sepsis risk and death, and also analyzed the correlation between vitamin D level and sepsis-related factors. ⋯ Lower status of vitamin D may be a biomarker of sepsis risk in overall populations, Caucasians, and Africans. Vitamin D level has no impact on the biochemical indexes and prognosis of sepsis. However, further studies should be performed in the future.

The use of colloidal silica contained in different cryopellet formulations is examined as a contact activator of blood in an intrinsic coagulation test. In particular the necessary amount of silica per cryopellet was determined, as well as the interfering effects of cryopellet components on coagulation. ⋯ A silica-containing cryopellet can be prepared and works as well as ellagic acid as an activator in intrinsic rotational thromboelastometry. A cryopellet avoids dilution of the whole blood sample and hence also of coagulation-relevant blood components that can alter the coagulation result.

Fluid resuscitation with crystalloid and colloid solutions is a common treatment in perioperative medicine. However, a variety of unbalanced or balanced solutions are used in clinical practice and there is still vivid debate going on regarding selection of optimal fluid with minimal negative effect on coagulation to minimize bleeding and blood transfusion requirements. The aim of the study was to investigate adverse effects of balanced crystalloids and colloids on coagulation measured by thromboelastometry in vitro. ⋯ Balanced crystalloid solution does not seem to have a negative influence on the coagulation process as measured by thromboelastometry. On the other hand, balanced colloids may impair propagation phase of coagulation, strength of coagulum, and level of functional fibrinogen. Hydroxyethyl starch seems to have a stronger anticoagulant effect compared to gelatin.
