To investigate the serum retinol binding protein (RBP)-4, cystatin C (Cys C), homocysteine (HCY) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (NT2DM) patients, prediabetes mellitus (PDM) subjects and normal controls, as well as their correlation with clinical and laboratory indexes, such as blood pressure and lipoprotein. ⋯ Aberrant Cys C expression and its clinical associations in NT2DM suggest their important role in this disease.

It is proposed that survivin plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of cancer. Immune regulatory cells are associated with the growth of cancer in the body. Antisenses for the key molecules can suppress tumor growth. This study tests the hypothesis that the antisense of survivin can inhibit cervical cancer. ⋯ The results suggest that the survivin antisense has the potential to be used in the treatment of cervical cancer.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the endothelial-dependent and -independent arterial vessels' reactivity in patients in the long term after kidney transplantation (KTx). ⋯ Both endothelium-dependent and -independent arterial wall reactions decrease with age. The endothelial-dependent vascular response is more attenuated in KTx patients than the independent one. The endothelium-independent vasodilation in KTx patients is comparable with that in healthy people.

The modifying effect of FTO gene expression level on change in body mass index and body composition has not been studied before. This study aimed to investigate the association between change in the expression level of the FTO gene and changes in anthropometric measurements in obese and overweight adolescent boys. ⋯ FTO gene expression change was associated with change in %SM in male adolescents. Future studies are required to assess the interactions between FTO gene expression in different tissues and body composition.

The role of adipokines in neoplasms not related to obesity is unclear. The presence of adiponectin receptors 1 and 2 (AdipoR1 and AdipoR2) as well as the leptin receptor (Ob-R) has been recognized in human adrenal tumors. The authors of the present study were the first to compare the expression of these receptors in histopathologically distinct adrenal tumors. ⋯ These novel findings suggest that adiponectin and leptin receptors could play a regulatory role in human adrenal neoplasms.
