To investigate the serum retinol binding protein (RBP)-4, cystatin C (Cys C), homocysteine (HCY) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (NT2DM) patients, prediabetes mellitus (PDM) subjects and normal controls, as well as their correlation with clinical and laboratory indexes, such as blood pressure and lipoprotein. ⋯ Aberrant Cys C expression and its clinical associations in NT2DM suggest their important role in this disease.

The association between triglycerides (TG) and cardiovascular diseases is complex. The classification of hypertriglyceridemic (HTG) phenotypes proposed by Fredrickson, Levy and Lees (FLL) helps inform treatment strategies. We aimed to describe levels of several lipoprotein variables from individuals with HTG FLL phenotypes from the Very Large Database of Lipids. ⋯ This observational hypothesis-generating study provides insight into the complexity of lipid metabolism in HTG phenotypes, including less traditional lipid measures such as LDL density, HDL subclasses and Lp(a)-C.

Complete mesocolic excision (CME) is generally accepted as state of the art in colon cancer surgery. However, the long-term impact of CME has not been systematically examined. Therefore cohort studies might be a possible way to clarify any differences between conventional resections and CME. Following bilateral cooperation between the Department of Surgery/University Hospital of Erlangen and the 1st Surgical Department of the General Hospital of Nikaia/Piraeus, including teaching activities for introduction of CME, a cohort study was performed, considering surgical quality criteria and clinical outcome. ⋯ Complete mesocolic excision appears to offer a superior oncological result without any increase of postoperative morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, CME represents a surgical technique which can be established in a surgical department after previous teaching without increasing the postoperative complication rate.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are the most common foot injuries leading to lower extremity amputation in diabetic patients. Recent studies showed that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) played important roles in diverse biological processes. In this study, we focused on identifying differentially expressed long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in DFU. ⋯ Bioinformatics analysis showed that differentially expressed lncRNAs were involved in regulating the ERK1 and ERK2 cascade, secondary alcohol biosynthetic process, centrosome duplication and DNA repair. These results suggested the potential prognostic value of lncRNAs in DFU.

The aim was to evaluate the diagnostic value of the Nakagawa and Csendes pathology classification systems in preoperative imaging of Mirizzi syndrome. Mirizzi syndrome is a type of biliary system obstruction caused by stones impacted in a gallbladder neck or cystic duct situated parallel to the common bile duct, causing extrinsic common bile duct stenosis or obstruction, which can lead to recurrent obstructive jaundice, bile duct erosion, and cholangitis. Therefore, the preoperative identification and classification of Mirizzi syndrome is vital for a good surgical result. We explored the applicability of two pathological classification systems to diagnostic imaging. ⋯ Compared with the Csendes pathology classification system, the Nagakawa classification is more adaptable to preoperative imaging and treatment planning.
